Knife question.

Give me a hint of a good auto open knife in the 40.00
range. There are quite a few but I know some are a better deal,
meaning quality, than others. I am not looking for fancy but
something in the AK category.
That may or may not be a good analogy but you know
what I mean.

I currently carry a Remington sportsman series made in China(course)
but it holds a decent edge, blade has no side to side motion, it locks up tight
and the lock is the same width as the blade. It was a gift from my uncle in law,
he carried it for a long time and trusted it. But I want a switchblade, as it will be
my gift to me for my birthday I need something that I will trust and will last
a long time.

Funny but I found a AK 74 knife, anyway, something in this genre is
my thought. School me.

OTF or OTS?

I got a couple Benchmade infidels both full size and small and a couple presidios courtesy of uncle sugar but I don't carry them, they ar $350-400 knives for the infidels, $250 for the presidios but i honestly don't see it, I would put them in $50-80 dollar range. The steel is ok, the machining is ok, and the mechanism is nothing amazing. I picked up an old school out the side in italy a while back, and it is a much more solid knife and was only $40 if I remember right.

I would look at a lever lock switchblade, reduces the chance of a pocket opening and its a solid lock blade when its out.

Cheap autos are cheap autos. There are a lot of assisted openers like the Kershaw Blur that are well priced and open just as fast as an auto.

I like my pocket wave knives like my Cold Steel AK-47.

They open as fast as an auto (when deployed from your pocket) and have a much stronger lock-up, plus they lack the additional weight and complexity of a spring powered knife.

I've got that knife as well as an Emerson Commander with the wave opener and your right, they can be deployed as fast or faster than an auto.

An emerson CQC-7 is my EDC knife as well, it has been with me all over the world, and still going strong. I agree with both of you, the wave feature makes them the fastest opening knives.

I've never been a big fan of the tanto blade profile though I do have a few. That being said, if you're carrying an Emerson you've chosen well in my book!

Carried a CQC-12 for about 4 years, carried this CQC-7 for the last 5, and just ordered a CQC-8 about an an hour ago. I agree the tanto is not my favorite blade style, but it does well.

Good deal. The CQC-8 is one of the other Emerson models on my wish list. Have you looked at any of the Hinderer models? Military members get an excellent discount on them. They still aren't cheap but you'll save several hundred off the street price.

They aren't cheap but I believe you are entitled to make two purchases a year. You could probably sell one at full market and the other would end up costing you 50% less than you paid for it.

These guys have the wharncliffe in stock for $500. I would expect your discount price from Hinderer to be closer to $300 but don't quote me as I'm not eligible as a veteran, (not active duty).

I don't use a lanyard now but I have in the past. Mostly to keep a knife, or any other tool, from falling somewhere it would be difficult to impossible to retrieve. The lanyard normally attaches to the person using the knife, like to a belt loop. Using a lanyard has kept me from loosing a knife or two, and I learned about how useful they could be after losing a knife or two!

As noted above a lanyard is almost a necessity when working aloft or over\ near water. It's also a good way to keep some extra cordage handy if your lanyard is braided paracord or the like. That being said I see a lot of lanyards on folders with pocket clips sporting different skulls and other lanyard jewelry. Nothing wrong with that, just not my cup o tea. My CRK knives are the only ones that come with a lanyard and they are removed prior to entering my EDC rotation.

I saw a you tube vid and he guy had a lanyard on a small Spyderco knife. He used the lanyard
for leverage by holding the lanyard between his pinky and palm, like a cloth handle extension.
I'm gonna put one on the Leek(learn how to tie one first) and see what happens.
