This happened yesterday:
CARLSBAD, Calif. -- A gunman opened fire on a crowded school playground Friday, striking two children before construction workers tackled him, authorities said.
The suspect parked his car around noon, jumped a fence and opened fire as he walked across campus in the north San Diego suburb, said Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain. The students, ages 6 and 7, were both shot in their right arms. Police initially believed the children were grazed by bullets, but later determined the bullets passed through their arms. The injuries are not life-threatening and the children are expected to make a full recovery, Cain said.

Oh, but if only we could pass some common-sense gun control laws to stop these crazy people from getting guns!
Let's not forget how well that's working out for China:
Seven students and two teachers died after a knife attack at a kindergarten in Shaanxi Province, Northwest China, that left 11 other children injured, the latest in a series of violent attacks on schools in China.
Huanmin Wu, 48, entered the privately-run kindergarten in Linchang Village this morning, attacking the students and teachers with a meat cleaver, killing five boys, two girls and a female teacher, according to a statement from Shaanxi's emergency office.
Wu then returned home and killed himself, officials said. His motives were unknown.
Eleven children were hospitalized with at least two reported to be in serious condition.
The attack took place on the outskirts of Hanzhong, an industrial city of about 3.7 million. Hanzhong last week deployed 2,000 police officers and security guards to patrol schools and kindergartens in the wake of a slew school attacks across the country, according to the city's website.

Just remember stories like these whenever you hear someone talk about the latest crazed gun-man who shoots up an elementary school. I mean, you can take the guns away from the crazies, but how do you keep the crazies away from the kids? Disarm all the law-abiding people, and who is supposed to intervene to stop such attacks? The police? Yeah right. They're only 15 minutes too late...
At least with a crazed gun-man, you can catch him off-guard when he's reloading. Try doing that against someone wielding a butcher knife, if you are unarmed...
