Eric Fanning, who is openly gay and a former advisor to Defense Secretary Ash Carter, has been nominated to be the next Army secretary, the Army Times and The Washington Post reported Friday.

The Senate must still confirm his nomination. For more than 25 years, he has been a specialist on defense and national security issues. The Washington Post reported that as Army secretary, he would be partnered with Gen. Mark Milley, the Army's top general since August.

“Eric brings many years of proven experience and exceptional leadership to this new role,” Obama said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Eric to keep our Army the very best in the world.”

Fanning has been acting undersecretary of the Army since June, The Associated Press reported. In addition to his role with Carter, he has held senior positions in the Air Force.

Fanning would replace John McHugh, who has said he plans to step down no later than Nov. 1, the AP reported.

He will be heading to Afghanistan soon to "investigate" the Bachi Bazi reports.

I guess it would be out of the question to have an Army Secretary who had actually served in the military at some point in his life.

Remember the one who was the best I have ever seen? He was not the Secretary of the Army, but the Secretary of the Navy in 1982, he was trying to get a 600 Ship Navy. He came real close to it, but back then. all of Congress was Democrat. He resigned in Disgust. I still remember him to this day. Reagan picked a great Man for the Job when he was picked. My Brother was in the Navy the same time I was in the Army. I recall him speaking fondly of him. What was his Name? Paul
