HOUSTON – Houston City Council Member Jarvis Johnson will not face charges for evading arrest.

A Harris County grand jury no-billed Johnson Monday morning.

The charges were in connection with an incident in July in which police said they saw Johnson speeding in northeast Houston.

An HPD officer said when he tried to pull Johnson over, the politician kept going and led the officer on a brief, slow-speed chase.

Johnson said he pulled over as soon as he noticed the officer’s lights.

Johnson was arrested and accused of felony evading, but the grand jury decided there was not enough evidence to show he did anything wrong.

After the jury declined to charge him, Johnson addressed the case.

"We need to make sure we’re doing more patrol than we are doing speed traps. A speed trap set up at night in a crime-riddled community is disingenuous to the citizens of that community,":jerk-n-off: Johnson said. "I think it’s important to continue to make that community safe certainly of speeders, but more importantly of the criminal element that plagues that community."

Johnson also said he appreciates all the support he’s received from his family, his Houston City Council colleagues and area residents since his arrest.

City councilman won't face charges for evading arrest

A Harris County grand jury has declined this morning to indict Houston City Councilman Jarvis Johnson on charges stemming from his arrest in June for evading arrest, according to his attorney.
Johnson was accused of fleeing an officer who tried to pull him over for driving 62 mph in a 45 mph zone in the 2300 block of the Eastex Freeway service road at 9:45 p.m. June 30. It was not a high-speed pursuit.
"I have maintained my innocence through this entire ordeal," Johnson said. "We're excited and certainly very appreciative of the grand jury coming back with a no-bill charge."
Johnson said he does not hold hard feelings for city police department, but he urged officers to stop focusing on setting up "speed traps" to catch drivers, particularly in the Fifth Ward.
"A speed trap set up at night in a crime-riddled community is disingenuous to the citizens," Johnson said, adding that the police should concentrate on patrolling for crime.
The councilman acknowledged that he was speeding — though he did not get a speeding ticket — but said he was not trying to evade arrest.
According to police, officer Steven Running turned on his emergency lights and siren and followed Johnson, who was driving a 2003 Toyota Sequoia, five or six blocks before the councilman pulled into a private driveway and stopped at 2606 Staples.
A woman riding with Johnson, identified as a council aide, was not detained.
Johnson has said that as soon as he noticed the officer's lights and sirens, he turned into his family's non-profit Youth Center.
Johnson has represented the northeast Houston district since 2006.
