Local leaders in Ottumwa will consider an ordinance that would put restrictions on where people could carry concealed weapons. When the Ottumwa City Council meets in regular session Tuesday evening it will consider an ordinance that would prohibit firearms from being carried on city owned or leased buildings, parks, the courthouse and the law enforcement center.

Ottumwa retreats, while Gardner complains

October 19th, 2010 2:24 pm CT

Various news sources, including The Heartland Connection, are reporting that Ottmwa has decided to NOT bring up a proposed anti-gun ordinance at tonight's City Council meeting. This was originally reported in my Examiner column yesterday. While that is good news, there is a wrinkle – the ordinance change hasn't been killed. According to sources in Ottumwa, it's been tabled with the option to bring it back up for consideration a later date.

Ottumwa Chief of Police Clark still confused

October 25th, 2010 10:58 pm CT

I reported last week that the City of Ottumwa backed off of their proposal to introduce an ordinance that would ban firearms on city property – and violate state law in the process. I noted at the time that while they were tabling the discussion for now, there was always a chance that the ordinance could rear its ugly head again at a later date.

The Ottumwa City Council swears that there's nothing in the immediate works to reintroduce the ordinance in any form. However, Police Chief Jim Clark still doesn't understand the situation. Chief Clark is quoted in The Heartland Connection as saying:

“I'm fully in favor of the 2nd amendment, and I firmly believe that every citizen should be able to purchase as many guns as they want and have as many guns as they want,” said Chief Clark. “I don't believe in registration, [and] again, I'm a firm believer in the 2nd amendment. However, I'm also concerned about the safety of our employees at city hall, at the courthouse, here at the law center.”
