I finished up refinishing the Mosin stock I started on last week.
It is 4 rubbed coats of BLO. I was hoping multiple coats would darken the wood somewhat, but it didn't happen as I expected.

What I need is your HONEST opinion on the color.

My opinion is it doesn't look like it has any stain on it. I prefer red looking wood though.

It has no stain. The stock was in perfect condition when I got the rifle. It did have the typical red syrup finish that looked like a kid applied it.
It was pretty damn ugly.
I have some RIT dye mixed up that I use for my pistol builds that is reddish in color. I may apply some of that to see if it's compatible with BLO.

I also prefer the shiney look, it looks dull to me. I don't really know what Boiled Linseed oil is supposed to do. I have just used stain with some RIT in it, and then finish with some tung oil. I prefer to get a nice shine out of it.

Really, your opinion is what matters.

Bet it looks better in person but even so I don't like it. That dye you mentioned might do the trick. There is a recipe some place on the web for the Russian shellac, the reddish tint is in the shellac not on the wood. Maybe someone knows were to find it?

I like it, and I prefer the dull look over a shiny.

I agree fully with you both.

I just tried mixing BLO, and the RIT dye formula I have. It looks the two are compatible.
I did not remove any BLO from the stock, but instead applied The RIT mixture, with excellent results. After it dries for a couple weeks, I'll apply a finish.

The color is now the reddish color I am used to. It looks 10 times better.

Before BLO a stain the color you want would have been good. Now the wood is sealed and won't take stain.

Still looks good but no Mosin save for the Polish was ever that bright. Even my un-laqured Yugo has a dark finish.

The stain did take, apparently the denatured alcohol used as a a carrier for the dye, allowed the stain to penetrate the previous coats of BLO.

I'll post some pics in a few. Kinda tied up at the moment.

Thanks. I do like the stained version.
Yep, the tapping is done. I made a mount since Russian mounts are out of my price range right now.
I'm ready to bore sight it for a range trip this weekend.

The mount is cruide looking, but I am making a refined one to take it's place.
The riser bars are welded so there will be no forward or backward movement. I just bore sighted the scope, and it's within 4" @ 100 yds.

this is what my M44 looks like. i like the look personally.

i had a link to the Commie Shellac recipe many moons ago, but i think it was to the old GN and i nuked it. if you (or anyone) decide that a shellac finish is what you may be interested in i would suggest looking here for shellac flake. http://www.shellac.net/

there is also some useful info on dye's and stains there.

just an FYI.....

Looks weird without the red shellac.

But that's just me...
