I have an SAR2 that I believe is severely over-gassed. Since replacement barrels are difficult to acquire I have an idea, but I need to know if it is reasonably feasible.

I also have a un-used Romanian AKM parts kit sitting around. I'm wondering if it's possible without too much difficulty to replace the 5.45 parts with the 7.62x39mm parts and get a functioning rifle at the end. I know I would have to replace the front trunnion and barrel assembly, use the 7.62 bolt carrier group, and open up the mag well slightly.

Any recommendations or suggestions appreciated.

IMHO... dont bother going from 5.45 to 762x39 .

theres more to it than just what you stated, Be cheaper to buy a new virgin gas block and drill a smaller gas port hole.

Or you could sell the sar-2 and buy a new 762x39 gun.

thread the hole in teh gas block for a set screw. drill the gas hole in the set screw. infinitely adjustable by changing ojut the drilled screw

that works too... could be all done and bought locally for less than $30.
