I am doing some extensive research on my family history and this morning found that my 6 x great grandfather (born 1757) was a Hessian soldier who deserted in New York and went to Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Where my mothers side of the family originates.

I never thought I would find back this far. It is amazing.

update:

Konrad Reyer, as a soldier in the Regiment 'von Mirbach', subsequently 'Jung von Lossberg', participated in the American War of Independence. He was born around 1757/58 and emanated from Niederthalhausen, a small village between Bad Hersfeld and Rothenburg/Fulda.
He deserted on 1 September 1783, i.e. after the conclusion of hostilities, leaving his quarters in New York without uniform or arms. His assets had amounted to 1175.50 Reichtaler. ( Value in 1983= DM 120 to a Reichtaler)
