I have hard cast bullets from this company. They are 44 caliber and i intended to do some plinking with a 44 magnum pistol. Are gas checks a must this is new to me.

Not familiar with that brand. However, the answer to your question is "no".

Gas checks are not required.

They are very useful at higher pressures and velocities though to prevent gas cutting and give best accuracy.

Loading for plinking to 900 fps is where these plain-based bullets shine.

Try 8.0 Grains of Unique or so with 240 grain cast - good plinking load.

Do flair the case mouths a bit more than you might with jacketed bullets though to prevent shaving your bullets and apply a good firm crimp for best results.
