Finally picked up one Big Green's R1s last weekend.

On initial impression, not bad. I've seen, and have owned, better. But for mid-entry level 1911, it's not bad.

Finish is good, fit is good, and it handles pretty good. Slide is smooth to rack, but the trigger pull leaves a lot to be desired. And, for $650, I wouldn't kick it to the curb.

One thing that I could do without is the in-the-white bushing. For crying out loud, could you please make the barrel bushing the same color as the rest of the pistol? Would that be too much to ask?

I'll post more about it this weekend when I can get out and put a few down range.

This brings the collection to 8.

Now THAT'S the way! Wood double-diamond grips, no nonsense black finish and no stupid giant beavertails or ambi crap and a flat mainspring housing. A 1911 the way JMB designed it!

Nice. I agree with you on the bushing.
Is the Remington forged frame and slide? How about MIM parts?

For $650 MIM parts are likely I think

The Remington R1 is a Series 80 type 1911 pistol. I don't believe that is a JMB design. The frames are cast and the slides are forged.

Why are all of the manufacturers jumpin on the firing pin safety bandwagon?

Aren't there enough safeties built into the 1911 as is?

Very nice. Probably only Remington 1911 I'll ever be able to afford :D

Some of us southpaws need that ambi crap!

I'm still debating on what to do with her to make her more 'lefthand friendly'. I think I'll wait until the warranty runs out before I do anytthing drastic.

That seems to be nicer than the Springfield GI model.... what kind of sights are on that?

VERY nice pistol if I may say...

Here are some detailed pics of the R1 that will hopefully answer some questions about this piece.

First, overall from the other side.

Some different shots of the sights. They're not nite-sights, just a standard 3-dot set up. Kind of dig the whole dovetailed front site, as while I haven't hand any issues with staked in FSs, I've heard enough about them to be wary.

It's got a beveled mag well, so for the purists out there, sorry.

Short shoe trigger, that is, well, squishy, but it's not something I can't take care of myself.

Here's a better view of the gawd-awful barrel bushing.

And a few pics of the mag. It's a 7 rder and is marked with the Big Green's "R" similar to what Colt did on their mags. Plus, there's two of them.

It appears as though the only stuff on the pistol that is MIM, is the manual safety, the magazine release, and possibly the slide stop.

Most of my complaints about the pistol are easily fixed and will be in the next couple of weeks. I've got a couple of Colt triggers from some other projects that I can pop in that may improve the trigger. But if they don't work out the way I'd like, I just got my latest copy of the Brownells 1911 catalog.

Steve

Oh. Well then I stand corrected. I didn't know it was a Series-80 design. At least it LOOKS like a clean JMB design...

Got out to the range yesterday and put 100 rds of 230 gr Remington/UMC FMJ through the R1. The results?

50 rds at 7 yds, freehanded:

The other 50 rds at 15 yds, freehanded:

One upsdie, is this is the first non-beavertailed 1911 I've fired that didn't draw blood on the web of my hand. Looks like the only mods I'm going to make are a new bushing, ambi-safety and a new trigger. Maybe some of them cool Remington rosewoods they've got listed on their website if they ever come available.

Definitely a keeper. :eyebrows:

Nice looking 1911. Other than the series 80 part I think Remington was smart with these. They fill a nice niche in the pricing range. It is kind of odd that they left the bushing in the white.
I hope the slide stop isn't MIM, that part takes quite a bit of force and I wouldn't trust MIM there, especially if things weren't fit 100% perfect.
It also wouldn't surprise me if the Disconnector is a MIM part. I've seen a lot of those on more expensive 1911's so it showing up in this price range wouldn't shock me. I'm a No MIM guy, but that wouldn't turn me away from a pistol that the parts can be changed out on for better ones over time.

Glad to see yours is shooting well. So far every review I have seen of them shows that they are performers and capable of acceptable accuracy and reliability. Yours is printing nicer than my Springer Loaded did before I had some work done to it.
