Obligatory disclaimer: Do not start your own silencer project without first obtaining the ATF Form 1 approval back in hand plus any state paperwork that may be required in your state. Silencers a legal in 30 some odd states - please stay legal.

So last time I left off with the Mock-up:

The tube, as I mentioned before is 316 stainless. The dimensions are 1.625 O.D. with a wall thickness of .065 and 15.5 inches long. It turns out that that much S.S. turns into a heavy PITA when hanging off the end of a barrel out to 18 inches. Time to re-evaluate.

"Thank you for calling On-line Metals. This is Beth how may I help you?" "This is dumbass L1A1Rocker, I need 3 feet of 1.625 OD T6 tubing with a wall thickness of .065 please." "I'm sorry Dumbass but that only comes with a wall thickness of .058" At this point I'm shouting to myself in my head DUMBASS! All the stuff you just made will not work on that!!! "Humm. . .Say Beth, how about in T3 aluminum?" "Why yes Mr. L1A1 we have exactly what you need in T3". "Great, how soon can you get it here. . ." I was saved! Thank you online metals!

T3 is a little over kill for a strictly sub sonic application but it had the correct deminsions so I didn't have to remake anything. So while that was on order I continued with some other things.

The tube and endcap will of course need to be blind pinned in place to be length legal, but I decided to place it using a set screw anyway. I did this just for the peace of mind that nothing would shift while the pin hole was being drilled and the pin being placed and welded. I was really scared that any kind of shift would cause a leak in the gas tube going through the end cap. So here are a few pics of putting in a set screw:

And the corresponding location on the barrel.

Now I needed to make a few more of the internal parts. The baffle, like the Mauser, is very old school. It will be a peace of 1/4 inch polyurethane with a hole in the center. I'll back that up on each side with some metal to give a little strength to it - I learned that it actually extends the life of the baffle.

On the Mauser I just found some appropriate sized washers, turned down the OD and drilled out the ID. This time I'm being more conscious of weight so I made these "washers" out of aluminum round stock. Step one was to turn down the OD

Step two was to just drill the correct I.D. Sorry, no pics of that step.

Step three was to chop off the disks. I did make a few extra in various thicknesses to allow for any variance in spacing - I wanted the endcap to screw down all the way but didn't want anything to jiggle either.

Here's some of the disks after cutting them off. You'll notice that the one in the center is much thicker than the others. This will serve as my blast baffle.

The next step was to make some expansion chambers. I used the same round stock that was already in the lathe for the disks - same OD too. When doing a lot of boring it is helpful to have some large drill bits - they can remove more material faster than a boring bar.

But, unfortunately I did have to resort to using the boring bar.

And FINALLY got to this point.

Oh, I forgot to show my helper I had during this little project.

Yep, that IS a cinder block she is sitting on. 9 month old Lab.

Now where was I? Oh, the expansion chambers. Well, you may notice that the boring bar is NOT very long. It took a long time to finally turn out the expansion chambers - very tedious work sometimes.

Here they are along with the Mauser expansion chambers and the bolt/carrier for size comparison.

Well, that's enough for now. I'll see about getting Part 4 out after dinner. Thanks for coming along for the ride.
