What could I spray on a map that was printed on my printer? Or, should I simply buy laminate to make it more sturdy for a backpacking trip?

If it was printed on an inkjet, even a small amount of water will smear it. Laminating the sheet is probably the easiest thing to do. If you don't have access to a laminating machine, I think they sell self adhesive pockets at office supply stores.

I've use 2 inch clear tape to laminate prints before, it's cheap and easy to do.

I've done that, it works surprisingly well.
There are non-smearing papers & ink, but those get expensive.
There are also sealing sprays that put on a plastic coating.

If you fold the map, spraying a sealer probably wouldn't work as well as what the other guys suggested. I use the 2" packing tape method.
Any of their options will work fine.
