How Smith & Wesson lost its apocalypse opportunity

By Kit R. Roane, contributorNovember 17, 2010: 11:26 AM ET

FORTUNE -- Smith & Wesson should be shooting like an ace. So why is it firing blanks? It's a question certain to be on the minds of shareholders who have watched the price of just about every other Armageddon trade skyrocket in value since the Western powers began trying to print their way to prosperity.

While investors flocking to precious metals, agricultural commodities, farmland and even Smith & Wesson's competitors have been richly rewarded, those who stuck with America's storied gun manufacturer have lost a bundle.

Heard about the fraud/bribery charges quite awhile ago. S&W sales are still strong in fact since 2006 they have averaged an increase in sales of $76,000,000 every year. Not $76M in sales, an increase of $76M.

I thought it was going to be because the M&P is a piece of shit.

Hmmm... I wonder if Obamy and the craps would bail them out if they get into trouble......Okay that took all of 1/10 of a second to figure out the answer....

They just have never been able to make a decent auto handgun and that's hurt them bad since revolvers have fell out of favor to so many.

I thought the SW99 was good. Even if it was just a copy of a P99.

I had a gun shop owner tell me once that S&W make the best 1911's because they purchased the most modern equipment. I dont know, i really dont care for the 1911 except for the grip. Far as I'm concerned the Croatians make the best .45 on the market. As far as revolvers, Ruger.

I just thought it would sell better than it did.

Really they've become a good deal now that they're discounted everywhere.

I actually like the steel framed S&W's. My 4046 is equal to or better than my g22's in everything but capacity

O.S.O.K.

I like my 4586 - its a heavy muther but man it's fun and comfortable to shoot. And despite its weight, it's nice and flat and carries pretty well in a iwb holster.

As far as the FCPA is concerned, leave it to a bunch of damned lawyers to hobble our company's efforts to secure foriegn sales. Yep. I am sure that all of the other countries in the world are closely monitoring their compay's activities in bribing foriegn officials to get contracts - sure they are.

So, our company's are getting smacked and being prevented from competing for business.

Just another stupid fucking one-sided impediment to hurt the American people.

If the lawyers were patriots, they'd be looking out for foriegners trying to bribe our officials...

You can't hardly beat a S&W J Frame for a small concealed carry weapon. I bought a new (no lock) 442 a few months back and love it.
