Reloading the 7.5...

I have an MAS 49/56 that I love to shoot, and I have 1200 rounds for it (all Privi Partizan) as stands, and I have a Hornady Lock n Load press. I know I need dies, but what about Bullet, Powder & Primer selection? Any advice on a good load for the rifle? Is the Privi brass any good?

I've not reloaded for my Frenchies yet but when I do I was planning on using the cases from my Indep ammo and reloading them with CCI #34 milspec primers. With it's floating firing pin the 49/56 has reportedly had issues with slam fires when using softer commercial primers. I figured better safe than sorry.

For bullets I was going with 147gr FMJ pull downs or some bargain brand .308 in the 150gr range. For powder I was planning on using IMR 4895 since I have lots of it but haven't looked at a specific load yet.

I'd go with that for sure. I've seen the original 7.5MAS ammo listed at 139-140gr at 2600fps and I believe 7.62x51 runs about 2800 with 146-150gr projectile. While probably not prudent to do so I'd be willing to bet the MAS 36 for sure and probably the MAS 49/56 are more than strong enough to handle 7.62x51 velocities. The only real issue I'd see would be with the gas system on the 49/56 which was often a problem with the Century .308 conversions. That being said 200fps less isn't an issue IMO when you're talking about a rifle that for the most part will only see duty at the range as a plinker.

Use .308 load guid and go for 2400fps the larger case volume will drop it to 2400fps. Make ten round and see how the action works and accuracy and if it's slugish go up 2g . START LOW BE SAFE! Be Safe!

My rifle has a McCann industries titanium aftermarket firing pin, WAAAAAY lighter pin for sure, I installed it right after my first slam fire, haven't had one since.

Thanks for the re-load tips, sounds pretty common sense... but you know what they say about common sense these days ;-).

I wished I knew about that firing pin before I sold my 49/56. I had a slamfire that dumped the mag. That was enough for me and sold it soon after. Busted my thumb in the process.

I just bought a Mas 49-56 at the local fun shop. $225 - I couldn't resist. I think that's a good price... There are none for sale on gunbroker. Weird.

I have to go check my reloading stuff - but I think I sold the dies and brass back when I sold my previous MAS's...

At least these take .308" pills :)

I see that graf's has privi ammo and brass. They also have the milspec primers.

ETA - did another search on gubroker - see one with a bid for $550 (has a reserve and by now of $724) - and there's one with no mag and mismatched furniture for $300 current bid...

Ordered some primers (Graf's has a sale on Federal milspec!) brass (privi) - oh dang - forgot the danged die set... well, will add that too.

Looking at the bolt and how the firing pin sits in it... I'm thinking "just slip a correct sized spring over the little booger and it will prevent it from going forward during chambering".

Anybody try this?

Well, got my privi brass, Lee die set and milspec primers from Grafs. Now, just need to get some time to load some rounds!

The bore of my 49/56 is coming clean finally - been working on it for a while - left it for a week with Hoppes copper solvent in it - just applied some more and leaving for another week (close the bolt and leave the wet patch in the muzzle).

The bore is strong but was dirty dirty dirty - the lands were all dark. Got em about 1/2 clean now.

I know that shooting it some will help loosen this crap up but since I don't have any ammo loaded yet... figured I'd keep cleaning.

FWIW, Wideners is selling unfired, berdan primed, corrosive (dated 1960-70's) 7.5 x 54 brass, 300 for $40. Since they are primed cases I'd imagine you'd have to pay the hazmat fee on top of shipping but you might be able to order quite a bit under that one $25 fee.

Got my 49/56 last month
been shooting Prvi and My loads made from 6.5 Swedish brass, CCI No.34 primers and Hornady 308 150gr FMJ's, 46gr IMR 4350


What OAL are you guys going with?
The way the cannalure sits on these 308 fmjs is nowhere near what is expected as OAL.

I made a few rounds up at various OAL and all run 100%.



Need to buy me a Stanag scope since I got a mount :D
