View Full Version : Question about Kittens?

So a few weeks back, my cat had 6 kittens.
4-black ones and 2- orange ones.
Halloween colors.
Mixed with the blood, it looked pretty cool.

Anyways.....

2 of the 4 black kittens have no tails.
Well, sort of.
But they are just short nubs like a bobcat or something.

What's the deal?

They seem perfectly healthy and happy and are getting into stuff already.

It sounds like you have a Tortoiseshell Manx, my friend. They are frequently tailless and have calico colors.

The mom is black calico looking...but with no white on her. Maybe just a speck or two. (But she does have a normal tail)
I did see another cat one day from a distance out it my fields.
It looked kinda similar...but I have no idea if it had a tail or not. Too far away.
Don't know if it's the father or not either.

Manx cats are semi-rare. White ones are worth a lot. From what I recall the tail-less gene is a recessive trait carried by the mother. Not positive on that though. The ‘Man’ in the Isle of Man refers to the Manx cat where they are thought to originate.

Could be Manx genes, could be Japanese Bobtail...there's half a dozen breeds these days that have tails ranging from none, to a nub, up to half and three quarter tails, some curly, some straight, some kinked.

I'd suggest putting that bitch under the spotlight and teasing her with a string thing until she talks. :)

Why are you so fixated with the father? It's not like he has a job, so you can't take him to court for child support. Cats are amazing animals. Just be content in the fact that you are a lucky man with all your pus...er, felines.

My Dads neighborhood is freaking crawling with feral tailless cats...Definitely Manx, definitely annoying. If any of you cat lovers want them, come out to az and we'll go trapping. There are over 30 that I have seen, and that was what I counted just looking down the alley.

If they ate pigeons I guess he would have an upside to all the stray cats, but all they do is eat the smaller birds.

A female cat in heat will attract every tomcat in the area. The more she gets, the more she wants until all the tomcats are too tired to fight each other OR do the female cat again.

Therefore, there are multiple fathers and there is a possibility that EACH KITTEN has a different father.

Aren't calaco cats color blind

Most cats (including lions and such) have vertical slit irises because their retinas have a horizontal line "sharp spot" ("Fovea centralis") unlike our round point sharp spot.

This allows a cat to see and discern objects all along a horizontal plane at once (rather than having to move their eyes).

If humans had cat retinas, they could read an entire sentence without moving their eyes left and right.

The iris closes vertically to maximize the "depth of field" effect which further sharpens their vision. They don't need to squint to see sharper like we do.

The horizontal line shaped fovea also DIMINISHES a cat's ability to judge distance and they will typically swing their heads left and right horizontally in order to get a better idea of depth (no doubt you have seen a cat do this before they jump).

Lastly, a cat needs night vision more than they need color vision, so they have evolved a retina with mostly rod cells and little cone cells. This means they see great in the dark, but they have very little color perception.

Strangely, some cats (like tigers) have a round iris, but they still have "mostly rods color blind" eyes.

Class dismissed.

Well this is getting interesting now.
I had never heard the term "tortoiseshell" before.
I googled it today and ran across some pics on the web.

I guess my momma cat is not a calico at all.
She looks identical, I mean exactly, like the tortoiseshell pics I found:
She has a daughter from her previous litter that looks exactly like this too....

cat coat color genetics are pretty variable

My cats' mother was a tortoiseshell, and their father was a grey tabby/white (we are sure of the parentage) with polydactyl paws. One of my cats looks like his father, the other is black and white, but neither have polydactyl paws. the other two kittens from the litter that still live at my friend's house are another black and white female and an orange tabby male, both with polydactyl paws like their father.

Calico and tortoiseshell cats are almost always female because the genes for calico coloration have something to do with XX chromosomes, very rarely you will find a male calico or tortoiseshell, but they tend to be sterile due to a chromosome mutation.

On the other hand, orange tabby coloration is more common in male cats. I've also heard that there is a link between orange coat coloration and aggression in male cats, which might be why an orange tabby male is sometimes viewed as the stereotypical tough battlescarred farm or alley dwelling tomcat.

as far as I know calicos have no genetic anomalies like an impaired sense of smell or vision problems. White cats with blue eyes however, do tend to suffer from deafness.

I'd say that's more old wive's tale than anything. Every red mackerel tabby I've known has been a big teddy bear and very laid back.

My ex-wife found a newly born kitten,he was an orange tabby. He was nearly dead,we revived him and my ex bottle fed him.She was her baby before we had kids.Turned out he might of suffered from some brain damage.

Sweet cat, very loving but dumb as a post!He was a full blown retard and the only cat on the planet I disliked. He knew I did not care for him but he would forget. He would jump in my lap look up at me with a look of confusion then suddenly realize he was in the wrong lap.He would jump down, drop a turd, and hide.

He was such a fat ass.he would eat and in 10 mins forgot he ate and go gorge himself again, then puke on my work boots by the front door.If one of the other cats was using the box and he needed to go he would just shit on the floor in front of it.We had more than one box just to prevent this.

He was scared of the vacuum cleaner when it was not even on.We had to put him away when we took it out for cleaning or he would shit himself trying to hide. And in the carrier we put him in locked in the bathroom out of sight he would shit himself when we ran the vacuum.

His name was Lucky!

I've heard that too actually so it's kinda conflicting. Maybe it's that they are less skittish, which would result in their being friendly toward their people but potentially more assertive in defending territories from other toms. I actually think the aggressiveness issue may have been mentioned in the context of protecting a territory from other male cats, not as having an overall aggressive demeanor.
