A friend has asked me for something affordable to put on his AR, any thoughts?

No as I can't afford to drop the $3K to $5K it would take to buy something I'd actually think was useful vs. useless. Some Gen II intensifiers and definitely Gen III would be my choice. You will see finer detail and see further or in less light with the higher gen stuff. http://www.nightline-inc.com/NightVision/en/products/m957.php Taking a quick look around I'd trust this one made by Nightline with a Grumman intensifier tube I think would be quality. Don't know what it would cost though.

Thank you Schuetz, the ol'boy asking about this want to clear out some coyotes from his hunting property. My guess is they are not worth $3k in nightvision.

Thanks again

Well if that's all he's trying to do, maybe the gen 1 stuff would work with an IR illuminator. Still probably 75 to 100 yards would be the max useful range given the low image quality.

There's a new "game light" - green I think that is used with a standard scope - that may very well work for you buddy. I've seen this in the gun magazines....

I couldn't find that ad - but here's something like it at Midway: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=879872

i think this is what O.S.O.K. is thinking of.....http://www.lasergenetics.com/nd3-laser-designator.aspx

i've considered getting one myself to help thin the coyote herds in my neighborhood. :biggrina:

Word is starting to spread that this is a great alternative to real nightvision equipment for night time hunting of animals. Fella at the Fredricksberg gunshow sold out by noon yesterday on these things.

yeah, one day i'll have the extra scratch layin around and i'll get one. i just want to know FOR SURE that the little bastards won't see the light like how they don't see red lights.

otherwise i'm not blowing $350-ish bucks on one.

Yeah - that's it! I think that's cool - if it works. Looks like a red dot or iluminated scope reticle would be the thing to go with this. That, or a thick reticule.

There is always this:

I believe that since it uses a ccd, rather than an emulsifier tube, it can withstand exposure to daylight.
