Good rifle to get? Have a lot of 308 so I need to get a rifle. Also found this for the PTR-91.

A great rifle, and a port buffer never fails....

But, the welded on version is 10 times better.....

Had mine for a couple years now. Haven't really shot it enough for thorough analysis though, but so far so good.....except sights. I'm not a fan of the original diopter sights so I got a set of XS Sight's HK91/ptr1 tritium front dot/rear peep sets because I'm so used to peeps from AR, Garand, etc. The peep is a bit of pain to sight in, so I haven't been able to dial it in yet. But truth be told, I'm debating getting Meprolight's HK91 sight set for their front blade and swallowing my pride and going back to the diopter, just so I can get a decent idea of where the irons are sighted in at.

Roller-lock system was weird to me because I've never seen one before and it can be a pain to clean, and make sure you clean it every so often (unlike me :)) to make sure you don't keep getting FTE.....yes, I'm lazy about cleaning my guns. I got the clamp on port buffer myself and it works wonderfully. I didn't go for the welded one because I didn't want to have the gun welded, but the clip on one sure did prevent the dings on the brass! Only other things I've had done to it are adding a paddle-mag release and a trigger job, both were done by Bill Springfield. Oh, and put on one of PTR's own muzzle comps for the few times I've been able to use it in three gun.

And sticking with the honesty thing, I've kinda thought about trading/selling it on occasion, not because it's a bad gun, just to get other .308 than I'd be more familiar with, i.e. AR-10 or M1A variant......dunno yet :D.

And now for the porn:

They are quality built HK clone rifles. The magazines are cheap and easy to find. Accuracy should be decent. The HK rifles have fluted chambers, if the flutes fill in they don't extract / cycle properly. Avoid tar based bullet sealant like one can find on Chilean ammo. A lacquer sealant is OK. Keeping it clean enough to cycle isn't a problem if one were to clean on a reasonable schedule. It's not a AK for absorbing dirt and lack of maintenance, but its not a fussy AR either.

ive heard remarks from ppl that owned both that the quality of the ptr rifles was better than the origional hk rifles.

on the platform in general, i have 2 century g3's, and i love em. teh one i shoot most has a sewer pipe for the barrel, and still outshoots about every other milsurp rifle i have. i never clean mine and shoot whatever garbage i find cheap, and never had it fail.

one bad point, i have heard of a certain run of ptr rifles that had the flutes cut in too shallow and were picky with ammo.

Those were the very first generation releases from a long time ago. You get one made since 2005 and it won't have any problem with that.

For under 1K I would be half tempted to get one just to try them out and, see how it compares to the M1A and FAL.

I still have mine, and still enjoy shooting it. There is much to be said good about it, but as it comes it is lacking in two or three departments IMO.

A paddle mag release, a trigger job, an ambi safety, and a wide forend all contribute to making the rifle perhaps the best in its class. Has a fully floated barrel, and the sights are such that the rifle is capable of extremely good accuracy. It accepts the clamp on scope readily, and the scope retains zero. One can get a 22 caliber adapter type kit and really expand its usefulness for training, point shooting, etc.

Maybe pick one up and see if it is something that feels good to you. Not everybody likes the same thing.

Bill Springfield installed mine for a C note. It makes a difference.

PTR91's are the best Hk G3 clones you can buy... JLD Enterprises (Now known as PTR91) bought the old Hk tool/die machinery from their Portugal factory years ago... So PTR91's are basically Hk guns with a different logo/stamp on it.

The quality of PTR91's are every bit as good as Hk in my opinion.

I bought mine from http://www.atlanticfirearms.com

I had a G3 back in the 90s. It was a nice rifle.

At the prices these things are commanding now, I would not be interested anymore.

As the Russians gave Egypt an AK factory, Maadis have something in common with a PTR91

As they have even spelled Maadi two ways we can't say that about them. LOL

I have read on other forums about US manufactured bolt heads fracturing. I have not seen this personally.

i have just read on another forum about somone who broke a bolt head. that was teh first time ive ever heard of it, not sure of the origin of the bolt, but i thought it was rare, considering ive never heard it before. maybe its just the start of the us bolt heads getting out there now with the import laws starting to make an impact??

I suppose the supply of surplus has to dry up eventually.

I've been thinking lately of a second PTR91. I have no real need, the one I have shoots just fine, but maybe a duplicate would be a good thing?
