NZ introduces new gun laws

Updated: 17:14, Sunday July 25, 2010

There's widespread relief that the New Zealand Government is finally taking action over high powered air guns.

New Zealand Police Minister Judith Collins has announced plans to reclassify high velocity air guns so people who own and possess them will require a firearms licence.

The New Zealand Police Association is welcoming the proposal saying it is high time these guns were restricted as too often they're used by criminals for violent attacks.

That's exactly what our Government wants.

"TIME FOR CHANGE" as Obumer would say.

Minister to tighten laws on airgun ownership

By GILES BROWN - The Press Last updated 05:00 26/07/2010

Criminals will be deprived of their "weapon of choice" by a proposed law change, Police Minister Judith Collins says.

Collins yesterday announced high-powered airguns would be reclassified so they could only be owned by those with a firearms licence.

The proposed change could be implemented by November through an amendment to the Arms Order.

However, Collins said there were no plans to try to register all firearms, something that had been an "expensive failure" in other countries.

In 2008, undercover police officer Sergeant Don Wilkinson was killed by a high-powered airgun.

Police said 44-year-old Aucklander Keith Kahi was also killed by an airgun this month.

Collins said the airgun's lethal potential and ease of purchase meant it was the "weapon of choice" for criminals. "The big message is that law-abiding users of guns don't need to worry about this [new law]. It makes it a little bit more difficult for criminals to get hold of them," she said.

She would seek Cabinet approval for the law change in the next few weeks.

New Zealand Police Association president Greg O'Connor said the change would help remove deadly firearms from criminals.
