CMMG will be releasing a 300 Black Out upper in the near future.
There will be some innovations I can't release at this point but when you see them, you will definetly want them.

Yes, It's a 300 AAC upper that will fit your 5.56 lower.
5.56 mags will work with the 300AAC. Same capacity.
I'm not sure of the barrel lengths yet. Looks like a 12.5 barrel and standard 16". Both medium profile.
The 300AAC looks to be a great round for the AR set up. More knock down, same capacity, subs and supersonic rounds available.

The innovation will involve options not available from other manufacturers as of yet. But that will be down the road.

Wilson has one out too - 7.62 WT: http://www.wilsoncombat.com/762x40WT.htm 150 grain to 2200 fps, 125 to 2400 fps.

Crazy how many new "AR" calibers there are now - but none have moved into a dominant position.

I guess the military has to pick one up and then that will be the duce.

Shadow, due you by chance work for CMMG or know a good source there? Reason I ask is because I'm looking into getting a .308 AR and CMMG is now producing entire rifles...only one I've seen so far is the 18" bull barrel with magpul prs stock version. From googling I've found out other versions are in the works. Any idea when they'll be out, or even listed on their website?

Could someone walk me through the advantages of .300 Blackout over say 6.5, 6.8, and even 5.56?

Lysander, you might be interested ib this:

Introducing the Advanced Armament Corp. 300 AAC BLACKOUT (300BLK). This system was developed to launch 30 caliber projectiles from the AR platform without a reduction in magazine capacity and compatible with the standard bolt.

Full power 123 grain ammunition matches the ballistics of the 7.62x39mm AK, has 37% more energy than 5.56mm M855, and 9% more than 6.8 SPC TAP 110. In fact, from a 9 inch barrel, the 300BLK has more muzzle energy than 5.56mm M855 from a 16 inch barrel. When 300 BLK is used in a 16 inch barrel, it has 23% more energy than 5.56mm M855 from a 16 inch barrel - with much higher-mass projectiles for a more dramatic effect on the target. Or choose subsonic cartridges for optimal use with a sound suppressor - 220 grain Sierra OTM (open-tip match) bullets vastly outperforms a 9mm MP5-SD in penetration and long range accuracy.

Due to the high efficiency of the cartridge, less powder is used than 5.56mm, which results in a rifle that is a comfortable to shoot - even with a short barrel.

It is another 300 Whisper type round. In other words its for suppressed fire use. Only thing I can think you'd want it for is covert sniper / counter sniper work. As civilians we don't have much call for that unless we are playing Rambo at the range. It's slow and accurate and you would use it dialed in to specific yardage, probably 200 to 300 yards max given how slow it is. With a can on the weapon it should be airgun quiet. Based on the AAC advertisment quote I'd say they may be touting it for an entry weapon chambering. Easy to suppress, hits like a brick up close.

Scheutz, Steve, thanks.

So essentially, this would be a nice round for a suppressed HD SBR, something to pop bad guys and not wake the baby. Sounds interesting.

Here is an FAQ I am working on:

It is simply a way to shoot 30 caliber bullets from an AR. The fact that it will cycle an AR with subsonic ammo is a bonus to some people, but I would not call that the primary use for it. Most people just want to hunt or use it for self-defense - and hunting deer with 223 is illegal in many areas.

Didn't mean to add to your plate. If you can get updated info that'd be awesome and much appreciated. Not in a hurry to spend my money, just trying to collect as much info as possible to make an educated decision. Thanks again and if it's a hassle don't worry about it, I'll keep looking around for info.

I am completely ignorant in this regard, so please excuse me. Why is this caliber better than say an upper in 7.62 x 39?
