I'm all for the Irish coffee. Tullamore Dew being the liquor of choice but unfortunately diabetes took that pleasure away from me. Sure would beat the hell of of Oxycontin though. I hate that stuff and the way it makes me feel.

I was given morphine after I spiked a fever last week, I was disapointed, didnt feel any thing. I was given oxy once, after I broke an ankle, I still hurt, but I didnt care. I was given Parafon Forte after a surgery, the migrain it gave me as it wore off wasnt worth taking it for pain. Perfer Tylenol [OG what does ND stand for?]

I will admit to using a sleeping aid yesterday, it was worth it but now I need lots of coffee to get up for work.

There was 30" of snow on my little car yesterday am, not sure what the total amount we got here was but when is spring? :tooth:

I am ready for the snow to melt.

Heading into the armory, with Heather driving of course. I have to pick up some "homework" to do at home, so I can make up the two days of drill I missed last weekend. My retirement day will be April 1st. Only 2 more drills to go!

21 years total. 8 total years of active duty and 12 years of part time Guard. I'm so done with this. I can't wait.

Saving up for a travel trailer. Looking for a 23 or 24 footer. Heather and I are going to spend the summer going places! She took the week off to care for me during my initial recovery after surgery. She's such a wonderful woman. I'm very lucky to have her.

My brother and step-son picked up a cord of wood over the weekend for me. The stuff is still wet, so it don't burn too well.

The pain was something else this morning. Took the pain meds about an hour to take the edge off.

It's raining. That's why things are green here. It rains all the time.

I saw the term on gunsnet of course [ND], Thanks OG, Suggestion for a travel trailer, they come in 2 foot measures, 24, 26, 28, etc. depending on how far away you are traveling, and how long you are staying, look for something you will be "comfortable" in. and can pull easily.

Brian, have you looked at Craigs list? http://www.craigslist.org I've been looking for a camp trailer too so I'll have a place to live when I tear down this house and build the wheelchair accessible house for Liz.

I found my F350 up in that area using craigslist last summer. I'm looking to spend about $5000 on the trailer. $1000 down and finance the rest through the credit union.

So when are you building the new house?

Oh. Great opportunity to show off my truck... It's a beast!

Oh...mmhuh.... its something wrong with that picture, right??! .....wait... oh yes. I cant see the ram on the hood.... I can see one outside my window though. Im in the same era, 2003... 2500 Dodge Ram Laramie, Cummins diesel of course. Modified all the way..... Turned 233000 miles today.

Im sitting here cutting 32-20 brass, converting them to 32-44. Boring job, but it pays off at the range. Little one sleeps over at my parents house, so its kind of quiet. Thats when the bottle of whiskey and the jar of beef jerkey drops out of the cabinet. I guess my wife is here somewhere, but I wount have a look see. That just means I have to do something domestic. Im not made for domestic things....

Have you guys seen the Ari Vatanen thread I got in the non firearm forum?? You should watch that guy winning the Pikes Peak. That was back in 1990 if I dont remember wrong. That was when the rally drivers could still use the group B cars.... In short, they were two seats with a good suspension, 4 wd, and 2000 pounds of dynamite behind you.

No news on the scandinavian front besides that Im going to write a letter to the prime minister and ask him what I have to do to get rid of my Norwegian citizenship. I cant be Norwegian when we got idiots running and ruining this fine country. I have to go somewhere else, a place where I can be Norwegian.

Well.... have a great weekend and have a lot of fun.

It's been awhile since I read any Norwegian news. By the way where would you go that is any better? Some of us envy your freedom. Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence eh?

You got all your norwegian right. Even the saying. Are you using tritrans or something??

Well, Im on the side thats green. I can admit that. But stupidity goes a long way. Ill give you a complete update when I get there in person. You`ll totaly understand. Norway is a free country. A rich country. We got nothing at all to complain about, BUT......

Norway Inc. got a big huge got damn pile of money. All due to the oil. This little frosty country got a LOT of oil. Now... just one example. When I go to work in the morning. 5 am. 1h20m drive to Oslo... Ok, fair enough. Working minimum 12 hours, fair enough...However, I have to use a road that kills a lot of people to get there. So, finally they have decided to make a freeway. (Been a plan for like 15 years.) Toll free?? NO. Belive it or not, but my annual cost, just to use the road will be $4200. Im not full of shit, its for real. So Im going to start a group.... The group that blows up toll stations.... In 5 years from now Im probably in jail. I dont mind, Ill have more friends than ever that way. I said it to Mona today. Get used to the idea of vissiting me behind bars. I got the knowledge, and Ill do it. We have had toll stations for a very long time. But you have to place your tent somewhere. Enough is enough. The road toll thing is just one tiny example. You would not grasp what we pay in tax and fees. This is it. We are going French..... I didnt mention up there that I pay 48% income tax.... YES I do!

One more... the people have paid for the oil developement. The builiding of the platforms, the ships, the refinery, the lot. Norway Inc got a cost of $0,33 per litre gas or diesel..... We have to pay $2.2 at the pump..... I bought my Dodge Ram in 2003. Back then it was relatively reasonable to buy. American cost, freight, dealer merit, and then it was mine. Now you have to pay.... hold on to something... $152666.67 just in tax to get that truck. Reason? It seats 6 people and got a big engine. If you dont belive me please feel free to call the assholes and ask. Ill pay that got damn phonecall for ya.... The French have a saying about the Norwegian rage...well, they are about to talk about that inside those fucking brick walls in Oslo too.

Jens Stoltenberg is a clown. A bad one... The Stoltenberg family has been politicians for generations. They have never produced anything. Not even a small pile of shit. This country is a senior citizen heading for the grave. Prosperity is indeed a sign of ruin.

I have no idea of which country that would welcome my simple demands. The US would be a cliché, you got a lot of things that makes sense. On the other hand, you got several things that dont. If I knew the english language a little bit better I could make this sound somewhat inteligent. I guess this sounds like a 2. grade complaint. Its not... By far.

Im proud of being a Norwegian. But this is it. I would fight for my King and country, but not for a bunch of morons and bullshit. If all hell broke loose and by luck or accident Stoltenberg and the lot fell into my trench, I would cut their neck with my teeth and use them as a gun rest/cover.

You just have to build a room for me OG... Ill do whatever work you need to have done. No snake hunting however..... But I could hunt moose with a knife.
That was a very long story short, even if it took a lot of words using bad english... Bottom line. Im fed up, pretty angry and I will blow up those toll stations. Just keep an eye up on the news from abroad.

OG...there is also one saying that says.... If you meet 4 guys, and 2 of them are assholes. Beat them all... the two normal guys could turn into assholes aswell.

Taxes is where all the Scandinavian countries lose it for me. High taxes couples with high welfare programs is the socialist equivalent of redistributing wealth. From those who make it to those who don't have it. Our country keeps trying to head that way and that is why the Tea Party was born. It wasn't a single issue but a whole bucket full of issues. The one thing you guys have that we don't yet is so many of your major industries are state owned and I have never seen a government any where in any country that can run a business as well as private owners can. I think that as much as anything brought the Soviet Union down. Not that simple of course but a huge factor.

I really haven't studied it, this is what I am picking off from my readings on world economies as a whole.

What is tritrans? The way I got the Norwegian was to look up a post from an artist on building fences where the grass was greener on the other side. Then I had that post translated to English, found the phrase I wanted and copied the original Norwegian. Probably long way around to getting it but I found that little poem and it tickled my giggle, it seemed appropriate.

This is Gold Butte lookout. This is one of the lookouts that the Sand Mountain Society (of which I am a member) restored from a mothball state. I get the privlege of opening and closing it every spring and fall. I was in the process of closing it down when I herniated that disc in my back. We also work in conjunction with the Forest Service to staff three lookouts during fire season to look for fires. I go up to Sand Mountain and watch for fires occasionally as one of the volunteers that gives the payed lookout a 4 day break every 10 days. Being alone up there this summer was wonderful medicine after coming home from Iraq with the Oregon National Guard.

It is now a rental. http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Gold_Butte_Lookout_Or/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=75520

It never fails! I get carried away in the moment, and post or say something that I wouldn't say around the ladies, and they overhear. :embarrassed: I apologize to anyone who I may have offended.

Brian, here's my truck. I took the picture at Ocean Shores last summer.

http://www.gunsnet.net/photopost/data/500/medium/DSCF0333.JPG

2004 F-250, XLT Sport, 4X4, Crewcab, 6.0L diesel.

Almost forgot! Last night, I ran across a truck that looks almost identical to mine. It belongs to the local State Patrol office! His has the hidden blue and red lights, 4 inch exhaust, ARP head studs, stage II injectors, and reprogrammed. The suspension was also reworked for better handling. I guess they figures there's nothing like a big black brute right on your tail to make you want to stop running!

btcave

I like your truck. I went with the long bed for the pure utility of it, but i like the look of the shorter bed. I have to be aware where I take it. Not too good trying to park in tight places.

That police truck sounds like a brute. I wonder kind of mileage he gets.

I've got 58,000 miles on mine now. I never had a diesel before. I just hope she stays repair free for a while.

I guess these had some software issues at first. Mine was reprogrammed by the former owner through Ford, as I'm pretty sure most were. I also found out the 6.0 has an issue with the EGR cooler going bad. There is aftermarket parts to address this as well, to include a bypass replacement (may not be exactly emissions legal in some states). I'm pretty sure mine is original. Crossing fingers it doesn't fail. Those are the only issues I'm aware that the 6.0 has had.

The former owner must of drove mine until the warranty ran out and then traded it in. It had 52000 miles on it when I bought it. Not a scratch on it. I hunt and do the lookouts, so it's not going to stay that way.

That was actually funny.... However....you guys, have to, do some powerstrokin.... The Cummins sound seem to attract those with skirts so you dont have to. Think about it the next time you drive by the Dodge dealer.....

Seriously... I could live with a Ford outside my window... That third option powered by Duramax.... That would not work for me.

Brian, I have a 16 foot trailer to haul my tractor, so the shortbed wasn't a problem. It took a while to get used to the length of the truck, but it wasn't too bad.

Did you know Ford has a 200,000 mile, 10 year warranty on the 6.0 engines? If you're having problems with the EGR system, get it in on the warranty. When I first got the truck, the check engine light was on. My service manager recommended that I drive I-90 to Spokane and back. He suspected there was soot plugging the EGR cooler due to short drives. Sure enough! On the way home, the light went off, and haven't been on since. At the next service, the mechanic noticed a leak at one of the heads. He checked to see if I had the upgraded cooler. Beings I did, he recommended I take a long drive whenever the engine threw a code saying the EGR system was acting up. If you ever have the engine torn apart, have the mechanic replace the headbolts with studs. It'll make it more reliable; You won't have to worry about blowing head gaskets if you decide to put an aftermarket program on your truck. One of the first things to do is replace the exhaust with 4 inch pipes. That will keep the exhaust temps down. Keeping the exhaust temps down will help save the turbo.

I think the cop said he's pushing around 400hp, and 600ft/lbs of torque. He gets a kick out of rice burners trying to outrun him. :D

OG- Prayers sent.

63- Thanks for the heads up on future maintenance.

My first project for the truck will be installing trailer braking. I'm normally a do it your self guy with cars and trucks, but I think this is a project I'll pay someone to do. Sometimes I have to do a project 2 or 3 times to get it right (ie getting a good seal after changing a thermostat), but I'm not going to gamble crossing the Cascades with a do it your self trailer braking system. Santiam Pass looses altitude fast when coming down into the high desert from the summit.

My trucks brakes shimmy some on that decent. Might need to rotate and balance the tires, or replace the rear self adjusters, or rotors and pads are in the near future. (I think they are drum brakes on the back, I haven't looked).

The Bronco turned me into an amateur mechanic. I was always working on that beast. Brakes, sensors, radiator, thermostat, water pump, chain cover gasket, fluid changes everywhere, 4x4 hubs, ect. It's so nice to own a vehicle I can drive and not be tearing it apart every 2 or 3 months. The 2003 Mustang has about 110,000 miles on it, so I'm looking at stuff failing on it pretty soon, I'm sure.

Until my back heals, I'm at the mercy of the mechanic. So crossing fingers I wont have issues until I heal and can start bending and twisting again. Crap, I can't even change my own oil right now!

Brian, I had the same problem with my truck. Turned out it was the front brake rotor. Our trucks have four wheel disk brakes. They're fairly simple to work on. Pop the calipers off, then the disks slid off. The front brakes may require some persuasion in the form of a 3lb hammer. One of the problems our trucks have is the weight of the engine. That weight makes the front brakes work quite a bit harder than trucks with gas engines. I warped my new front brakes in less than a year, which was a good thing as Ford warranties parts for a year. I'm not saying it's your front brakes, only that it's fairly easy to take care of the problem.

As for the trailer brakes, I installed mine on my truck. It's waaay easier than it was years ago. Behind your radio is a plug that sits there in mid-air plugged into nothing. That's where you plug in your trailer brake controller. You can access is from under your steering wheel when remove the shroud that covers your fuse panel. Plug the controller's harness there, and the other end into your controller. That's it!

This is the company I bought the controller from. http://www.southwestwheel.com/store/showproduct.aspx?ProductID=4751&SEName=tekonsha-prodigy-p2&gclid=CJG_0MmDzaYCFRxqgwodrhHnHg They sent me the wrong (free) harness, but sent me the new one, no question asked.

and...

I'm also a member of the Ford trucks site. It helped tons in the past! Ditto with car-parts. When my truck's front axle's locator bracket broke it's weld, I used it to buy another axle. It was way cheaper to rebuild that one than buying a new axle and swapping my parts into it. On top of that, I have the guts left over to use as spares in case this one dies. Oh! NAPA's Puget Sound warehouse is just down the hill from me, about a mile. :D

Sorry to hear about your mom OG, I hope she is ok and remember how to swear in Swedish.

I hope everyone else in here is ok too. Im ok, my better half aint. She has caught something we call the "krystall syke" (crystal illness). Makes her head spinn. Even if she is lying in the bed it feels like riding a roller coaster. I hope the doctors can do something because she is really suffering... Yet she has given me the orders to go to the range tomorrow. She is a keeper. Ill follow her orders and come home with some flowers.

Trucks.. mine needs some service. Ball joints are all used up. Ill change to a free spin hub while Im at it. Going to cost me bad, but it will pay off in the long run.

Thanks, she is uncomfortable because she only rests good on her back and that isn't going to happen for another month. Nothing wrong with her mouth and she remembers the words she wasn't supposed to hear or learn from Grandpa and great grandpa so she can cuss in Norwegian, Swede, Bohunk, Truck driver and Navy. Hopefully they got it all, they think so but only time will tell.

Hope your better half gets to feeling better soon, having the same problem on this side of the pond and it's keeping me out of my car, off my mule, out of my shop and away from my guns. I need to get outside and get some fresh air in my lungs and some exercise or I am going to go stark raving crazy. Nurse sister says there is only three steps to go completely over the sanity line and I have taken two of them already.

Put on some coffee, put a roast in the oven, a bowl of dip at your elbow and your favorite snack then sit back to watch the football game. If you feel like cheering say yippee, if you feel the urge to jump up and dance take a double dip with your snack. That's all the exercise you need till you are up on your feet again. Doctor has spoken, no charge this time.

OG, be sure to get some fresh air before I get there. It would be frustrating getting over there and having to dodge bullets, gravell, cups, jugs and whatever because you have lost your little last piece of sense.

Mechanical work... is ok.... as long as its not in the car or truck department. I have shortened my life by 23 years by doing that kind of work. 22 of those years because of pure rage and swearing. Those guys up...or downstairs must have a long list on me just because of my truck-mech time. I hate it. But those bills from the professional guys are even worse. So I have to deal with it...

I made some pretty tasy mooseballs tonight. Full of garlic and herbs. Even little one ate a ton. Next fall Ill try to shoot moose with a shotgun loaded with local herbs. Makes cooking a lot easier.

Had a great day at the range today. That old 32-44 Smith Wesson just have to be a winner. I cant understand why Smith Wesson ditched that caliber just to come up with a rather similar one. Only problem so far is that the primers must have been a lot harder back then. Hammer and chamber pressure mess up the indexing (dont know if you use that word, revolving-indexing)....Shot a few rounds with my old trapdoor aswell. Allways a pleasure. If I was sent to a desert planet not knowing what to face I would pick a trapdoor.... or an AK47. If I could choose I would stay home though. I prefer listening to the birds.

I can't say how much I appreciate how much Erika helps around here! No questions asked, no need to tell her, nothing! She just jumps in and helps with her sister.

Hedning, it was a car that did me under! If it was my truck, I don't think it would have been a problem. There's not much I can do on the thing without pulling the cab. :(

That reminds me; I need to replace the fuel filters on the beast. It's one of the few things I can do on the truck.

Just made pickled eggs tonight, tried something new, made a few sweet eggs for ma and some British Pub style for Biker Brother and me with the Jalapeno pepper in the juice pickling away with the eggs. Will let you know in 2 weeks if I should have stayed with tried and true or if experimenting is a good thing. With ma's I added a little sugar and half the spice. with mine I added cinamon, cloves, allspice, 50 % more picking spice instead of 10 black peppercorns. I have them but don't know how old they are so I'll grind them up and use them for regular pepper. That and a little extra vinegar instead of the full amount of water and I should be good to go, they aren't even cool enough to put in the refrigerator yet and they are already turning that lovely shade of pickled egg yellow.

:dancing-banana-red-:dancing-banana-red-:dancing-banana-red-

Of course I forgot to tell her that, I need to make her worry a little, takes her mind off the day when they come in to remove her stitches. I volunteered to bring in my pliers and do it for her. We are in trouble... The population of this country is 300 million.

160 million are retired.

That leaves 140 million to do the work.

There are 85 million in school.

Which leaves 55 million to do the work.

Of this there are 35 million employed by the federal government.

Leaving 20 million to do the work.

2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with killing Osama Bin-Laden.

Which leaves 17.2 million to do the work.

Take from that total the 15.8 million people who work for state and
city Governments. And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.

At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals.

Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.

Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.

That leaves just two people to do the work.

You and me.

And there you are,

Sitting on your ass,

At your computer, reading jokes..

Kathy, unfortunately, the problems with gas engines are they're noisy and can't be used indoors. Otherwise, I would put a small gas engine on her wheelchair, and use either hydraulics or a generator to keep the batteries charged. It would solve much problems.

63... Iv used those batteries they use for temporary traffic lights on my electric boat motor. It runs almost all summer. Heavy bastards, but they hold a lot of Ah.

I feel good about the weather. The days are getting longer and longer every day. Special feeling when the light comes back. Those poor bastards up north have to wait a few months more to see the sun at all.

Mona had a pretty good day yesterday. Today, all messed up. She will go to the hospital on monday. Just to have a look see. Hopefully its nothing else up there thats wrong. Crystals are bad enough. Anybody that knows how that crystal thing happen?

She and little one goes to Lanzarote next friday, if she can make the flight. "Jump on" flights are so cheap, and a week in the sun might cheer her up a little. She was well enough to give me hell when I was fluxing my lead earlier today though. Pretty cold outside, so I fired up the Lee P20 inside my reloading room. But the wooden stick I used had a tendency to catch fire and smoke the place. A little fan saved the day.

OG, I can see Muscoda is on the melting side on the thermometer today.

01-30-2011, 12:11 AM
You might want to rethink the track then, they have a wonderful ability to get you deeper in trouble before getting stuck and are harder to extricate. I'm thinking of all the people on the board you know that better than anybody not in a cavalry unit or working construction on tracked vehicles.

If my dinosaur memory remembers correctly from the old site you are clay based with poor drainage? Sort of a challenge and I don't envy you. I have considered this for my own back field which is primarily sand but would serve me in the winter like right now. It's the only thing I can think of that would be able to handle any terrain you can throw at it. Could be a bit bulky but the screws wouldn't have to be all that big for a single wheel chair and one passenger. Remember this thread?

Yeah.... I was a recover vehicle commander. I had to pull tracked armor out of sticky situations. Just like 4x4 drive trucks, they're harder to get stuck, but when they do, they're harder to get unstuck.

The biggest advantage tracks have over wheels is their smoother cross country ride. More than anything else, that's what I want for Liz.

More than anything else, that's what I want for Liz.That's what I thought but without a picture of your yard in my mind I just couldn't help thinking 4 big rubber wheels might be a little smoother. Hard to really tell without trying one vs the other, especially on a small short wheelbase vehicle. That just complicates things a bunch more. Me thinks you have a heck of a project and I wish you luck whichever way you end up going.

You got that straight, a lot of equipment I worked on or with was commissioned in WWII or the Korean War. My radar wasn't but it was the last one put in the fleet using vacuum tubes as the major electronics component. The deuce I drove at White Sands or in the Army reserves may have very well been some of the equipment used by or seen by my step father in Korea. Twostroke diesel, 1 cylinder 610 cid. After months of work the day finally arrived when he called me and said I better get over and help him fire it up. Not exactly a safe starting procedure on that one. Better be two, so one can call the paramedics. It started allright, but my old dad had forgotten to clean the pipe. Boats are Gods gift to man. we were incubated in water and going out on a large body of water is like returning to the womb, it is good for the soul and worth every penny. My row boat is my haven from the world, nobody can bother you when you are alone on a body of water and you are smart enough to leave communication devices locked up out of reach, out of sight and preferably turned off. Fishing pole optional, hooks, baits and lures not required to have a good day on a body of water.

But they sure add to the fun.

Never got into fishing. Between hunting, the Lookout's, the Guard and spending time with the wife, I just don't make the time. Not many lakes within 2 hours drive here, but quite a few if I'm willing to drive 3 hours. The Ocean is about an hour and a half away. The Columbia and Willamette rivers are close. My father in law says he'll take me sturgeon and salmon fishing. I should take him up on that before his cancer finally claims him.

I'm a poor fisherman anyway. Too impatient. Give me the wilderness teaming with deer or elk to hunt for my soul healing. If I don't heal well enough, I won't be diving into those canyons and climbing those ridges like I'm used to doing. Fishing may be in my future after all...

"Ha en jævlig fin dag alle sammen", means "Have one hell of a nice/fine day everybody".... "Jævlig" means something affected by the devil. Uses it for nice and bad things. If you want to say, "very good". You say "jævlig bra" (hell good). If you want to say, very bad-.. you say "jævlig dårlig" (hell bad). 63, that explains the deja vu feeling.

Yes, Danish and Norwegian are more or less identical the writing way. How we pronounce the words are something else. The Danes sounds like they have a potato down their throat. We understand them, but the words float together badly. We have a much sharper sound and R`s like Mexicans. Its like comparing American english and Scottish English.

I dont have any tasty coffee, just the Java Statoil coffee I got when I fueled up my truck. They have a good coffee deal. As much free coffee you can drink as long as you use a Statoil cup. Well, not totally free. You pay $20 for the cup, but thats it.

Second MRI done and all looks as it should be. I have about a year of pain cycling as the scar tissue forms, then hardens and contracts, which pulls on the nerve, then breaks down with activity and starts the process all over again. Explains why I'm cycling through pain and relief and back to pain. When the 8 week healing period is over, it's stretching and physical therapy to keep the scar tissue breaking down until I'm back to normal. I could see the scar tissue and the bone they removed from my spine in the image. Pretty cool.

I've got 90% of my leg control and strength back. The pain gets more intense over a period of about 6 or 7 days and then I feel pretty good for a few days. Then back to hurting. It's way better than before though, when I hurt 24/7 non-stop and limped around like I had a wooden leg.

After reading couple of posts in general disc. forum I understand that several places in the USA suffer from badass snow falls. How are you guys doing? Can you see the light? Eastern Norway has been good for a few days. Not too cold and a blue sky.

Had a blast at the range today. Black powder range. I friend of mine got an old muzzleloader for free doing some work for his boss. That boss could not have known what he gave away. My friend called me when he got the rifle and asked me if I was interested. And off course, Im totaly hooked on old guns so I picked it up a few days ago. This rifle is pure Norwegian rifle history..the "kassepipe" (boxpipe). It got that name from the square shape. It was first made with a snapplock, related to the flintlock. Later converted to percussion lock. These rifles were made out of marsh iron. That iron has a rather uniqe side. Its not likely to rust.

The rifle I picked up is made between 1740-1770..... So I brought this rifle to the range today. After making some 50 balls as soft as possible. The nipple was so wide that the hammer flew back into full cock when I fired. But it hit the paper at 50m. A few collectors at the range wanted to arrest me for using such a rifle for target shooting. I continued shooting after responding that the rifle is 260 years old and will outlast every one of us.... Really made my day wonderfull. Here are some pictures of an identical rifle that is displayed in a museum.

So there you got a little history lesson from the norwegian armory..... To be continued sooner or later...

That is a beautiful piece of art there Hedning! I would love to come upon such a find! Thank you for the little history lesson. They were true craftsman when making such things once upon a time.

I have to settle for my reproduction .50 cal. percussion cap Great Plains Rifle made by Lyman. I don't know what it's a reproduction of, but it shoots well. I honestly haven't shot it in about 3 years. I've also got a reproduction 1858 Army cap and ball revolver also. That one gets shot every year.

If you miss the moose with that one you can allways use it as a sledge and knock it down..... Might not be that bad to shoot with round balls. A good punch yes, but not close to the ogival bullets.....

Can you feel spring coming closer over there? Its on its way. Something about the light and air. 5 F this morning, but by noon it was 32 F. I better start looking for a flight OG.

As I sit here typing this it is 1520 hrs in the afternoon and it got all the way up to 6F degrees today -14,5 C to you. However it is 39 days, 2 hours, 35 minutes and 55 seconds to Spring. We will be ready for you but bring your warm socks and hat just in case.

My round ball weighs 177 grains and I use 90 gr of FF in the winter and 110 gr of FF in the summer. Muzzle velocity around 1600 fps give or take a little and only 8 ft/lbs of recoil against my old shoulder. You are talking about 8 times as much powder and a damn bullet that weighs over 4 pounds, that is almost as much as my loaded rifle weighs. Please tell me those numbers were a typo or you are using a different weight system than the rest of us use. That is almost 4 times heavier than the 50 cal MG bullets I used to shoot and I had sand bags holding down the legs on my tripod.

If you can handle that then you don't need no gun to take on a moose, you could kill a bear skin him and butcher him with the left hand while you wrestle with the moose with your right hand.

Hedning
02-09-2011, 06:54 PM
No typo... BUT, the 800 grs powder load was something I read that the military just tested. No pleasent experience for the shooter, so they settled for 400-550 grs... I think its an article about the 4 bore at wikipedia. Ill try to find the article. They even used them as early "thump guns". Loaded with a small explosive canon ball.

Just found the Wikipedia thing.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_bore

And here is a comparison in the cartridge department....
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/293/4bore.png

And comparing TKO factor:

Just for fun, I ran the equation for John “Pondoro” Taylor’s famous Taylor Knock-Out values on all the cartridges. Results were:

(CONTROL ROUND – 30-06 – TKO 21)
416 TAYLOR – TKO 57
470 NITRO EXPRESS (16” bbl) – TKO 69
505 GIBBS – TKO 87
510 WELLS – TKO 95
4-BORE – TKO 409 (!)

old Grump

I think I found the article:

The huge lead slugs fired by the gun were sometimes capable of stunning a charging African elephant to stop it on its tracks, or turn its charge(causing it to change direction to avoid the hunter)but it was generally unable to kill the creature outright with a frontal brain shot.[ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_bore#cite_note-shakariconnection.com-1)

Between 1874 and 1876, he slew exactly seventy-eight elephants with that gun, but eventually there was a double loading incident together with other recoil problems from it, and he finally gave it up as too "upsetting my nerve".

Frederick Courteney Selous

I think if I was back in those days I would have done my hunting with a bow and arrow. You can run a lot faster with a bow in your hand than you can with a 13 pound rifle. :mouse2:

A sledge would be my last choice. Damn hard to reach the head.... However, we have one older guy over here that actually killed a moose with his head. He ran right into it when he was riding his motorscooter. Luckily he had a helmet on. Pitch dark night down a slope, at 45 mph he made a clean hit to the moose`s neck. Dead on the spot. They found a heap of moose with a scooter stuck under it and a not so healthy veteran. That guy is so full of bad and good luck you wouldnt belive it. Besides that he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, or the kitchen for that matter....

How is the back coming btcave? Are you ready for running up and down those firetower steps again or did your last experience with them take towers out of your future?

Cats can be trained. I didn't like hair on my counters or on the top of my shelves and refrigerator. I couldn't keep them off the furniture but they were counter trained and that was good enough for me. Only reason I don't have them now is I became allergic to them and cannot tolerate in the house if I want to keep on breathing.

The back is doing better. I still have some sciatica pain and can't walk more than a half an hour before I need to sit for awhile. Getting better as each week passes. I plan to open Gold Butte Lookout around June. Snow levels determine when I can get to it. I'm giving more time to the restoration projects this summer, now that I'm retiring from the Guard. Sun, saw, hammer, paint and a spectacular view. Good for the soul. I still have that need to be a part of something bigger than me. Now that the military is going to be in my past, the lookouts will fill that role.

It snowed here. It's melting, but it's expected to start again Sunday or Monday.

Thursday night, I discovered there were charges on Liz's checking account that were unauthorized. There was a $250 charge from an online game company in California, a $21 charge from a internet advertising company in Florida, and three charges of $1.13, $1.14, and $1.15 charges from Istanbul, plus overseas charges. I got the Florida charges reversed without any problems. The charges from the on-line gaming company stated they noticed something wasn't right, so they froze the account. The outfit in Istanbul was a bit harder. There was no phone numbers or point of contacts to follow up on. I went to the bank and dealt with it there. By Friday evening, all the charges were reversed. The bank card was froze, and another issued.

Normally, I go through our checking and savings account once a day, rarely less than once a week. This month, I was preoccupied until this week. It's a good thing I caught this before it got out of hand.

Watching the videos from Japan makes me thankfull for living far away from the sea. The New Orleans thing gave me the same feeling. What a God awfull mess.

Norway is still white. Had some heavy snowing this afternoon, but it didnt last long. And I dont care anymore watching the Tsunami. I had to work some today. And I had to go out into no mans land with my GPS. Opening the the hind of my truck and found no snow shoes. 4 feet of snow was so much fun to walk in. Then again I was glad I was just tired and angry. It wasnt dangerous, it wouldnt kill me or mine. Just regular snow, everything normal.

Im a little close to the shore, no danger of tsunami here though. The people in Japan are amazing, they are strong and good to each other from the reports.

Hopefully your snow is melting. I have crocus sprouting.

My campaign manager is moving to FLA today, shes going to the Villages. A great retirement community. I will miss her, we became good friends in the past year.

Couple of 60 degree days in a row so most of the snow is gone. I'm just happy to see some green in the grass. Shot some revolvers and shotguns yesterday and I still have to climb over a pole of snow and ice to get to the 25 yard target stand. My hands are so shakey after being down and inactive this winter that all my groups were bad except the 45 BP and the 44 mag, I can't figure that one out. Did okay with the shotguns but my shoulder is really talking to me and my hands are all cramped up today. Partly guns but mostly from stapler. I got a lot of conditioning to do before I can do any yard work, I have a ton of old brush to clean up.

I hope you haven't given up on politics, I'm going to plant your campaign sign as soon as the ground thaws. I have 6" of mud and 24" of ice.
