I'm am looking to purchase my first AK47 and have been doing some research. My funds are limited and can spend no more than $600. Is there anything better than a WASR-10 at that price point, or is a WASR my only option? Any help to this AK newbie would be appreciated.

Welcome to the group !!! :welcome:

Check Atlantic Firearms. They have several listed in your price range that are not Century imports. Personally being an underfolder fan for their pure "evilness" I like the Yugo M70 AB2.

Also try Centerfire Systems as they have reasonably priced AK variants as well.

Welcome indeed!

The above suggestion is a good start.
There are many vendors offering AK below your price point.

Thanks for the info., I really like the http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct947.aspx . Thinking about buying it, anyone have experience with this rifle? Or have a opinion on choosing wood or poly furniture?

The rifle you link to looks nice. Although I have no knowledge on how good it is, with a lifetime warranty you shouldn't have any problems. Atlantic is a great company to deal with as well.

I was joking about that rifle in another thread because it has an AK-74 buttstock on an AKM receiver and they call it an AK47! Stamped receiver 7.62x39 variants are AKMs, and in this case one built because our right to keep and bear arms has been infringed. Still a nice rifle.

So, whats the difference between a AK 47 buttstock and a AK 74 buttstock?

Dimples.

The Interarms Tantals were some of the best on the market, I can only imagine that these x39 variants are every bit as good.

Stamped receiver 7.62x39 variants are AKMs,

I wonder if most gun shops would know what an AKM is? :D
