Usually of Swedish manufacture from the late-19th to early-20th Century, the blade assembly is stored in the barrel when not in use. When you're ready to use it, the blade pulls out, is flipped around and slid into the barrel which becomes the handle.
I've looked at them for the collection off and on for a couple of years but as the monkey said when he peed into the cash register "This'll run into money quick..."
