What has happened to Detroit has nothing to do with race, it has to do with economics. There are ghost towns all over America that were once populated by white people, but due to economics are no longer viable.

On the other hand, I watched a black guy and a Hispanic guy help push my SIL out of her parking spot because it was stuck in the ice last week. I saw two black male teens help an old white woman up from the sidewalk where she slipped on ice a month or so ago. I've seen dozens of acts of kindness similer in the last few years.

I have of course heard stories like yours. I have also heard stories that are opposite, where whites attacked blacks. It's a shame either way.

Instead of hating blacks, or whites, I hate the acts of violence that some men do to each other. I hate the ignorance and the weakness of the men who do these acts.

After reading your post here, all I can say is that I can see your point....and deadpool's point too.

The truth is someplace in the middle for me and "my" experiences.

I grew up in a big city too.
I lived in a culturally mixed neighborhood.
We had white, black, hispanic, asian and "other" all living in the same neighborhood and on the same streets.
In "my" neighborhood, everybody got along fine for the most part.
Racially mixed random acts of kindness happened all the time, just like you describe.
And as kids, we all played together and went to each other's houses all the time.

Now the flip side....
A few blocks away in one direction was a predominantly hispanic neighborhood.
In a different direction, a predominantly black neighborhood.
It was a different ballgame there.

As a white boy, I could and did go into the hispanic neighborhood all the time.
I had friends that lived there.
Most of the houses and apartments were run down.
However, others were nicer than mine!

I think I only got harassed once...maybe twice my whole life going in that neighborhood.
That's it, and I made a lot more friends there too through the friends I already knew there.
Ask anybody who knows about Vegas, and they will mention the 28th street locos gang.
I grew up 4 streets away, and ended up making friends with half of those guys as well as just regular people.

Now...if I went to NLV, it was different.
Mostly black and a shit hole by comparison.
No pride what so ever in their neighborhoods.
And as a white boy, I got harassed all the time there.
In fact, I made damn sure I NEVER went alone.

My point on the economics thing wasn't a race issue, just that Detroit was no longer economically what it once was. It's like the old mining towns that stopped producing.

Once there was wealth, then it was gone, what remained are the things too expensive to move..the houses, the abandoned buildings. So they lost value, so of course people with less money bought them cheaper and didn't or couldn't maintain them. It happens. It's pretty much the natural cycle of things.

Hate obviously isn't about economics (well not completely anyway), I'm not trying to excuse the poor and saying it's ok for them to hate, or be racist, or whatever.

My original point was just that Detroit didn't die because blacks took over, it's because the money left.

It is nice to see Detroit trying to do something about it, with programs like this. Some of those houses are incredible and could be nice places one day again. Personally I think it's probably too little too late, but the idea is a decent one that sometimes works.

I was a kid and didnt have a choice. My family still lives here and so do I. My grandparents moved here in the 40's when it was a white area. Then the blacks moved in in the 70's. I dont have to tell you what happened then. Since then a LOT of the low income shit has been torn down and replaced with million dollar homes, its beach front property after all. All in all it has taken about 15yrs for the change so why would I move now? There are still parts you dont go into but it nothing like it was in the 90's. Understand my nieghborhood is so big its almost considered a city.
