I was looking around Amazon.com and Youtube.com, looking for some things I don't have for SHTF/Survival... I was looking for a new "camping hatchet", then for "survival knifes", then got off topic when I started looking into wrapping knife handles with paracord...

I didn't realize that there was good and bad "550" out there... imposters if you will...

I learned that the good Para 550 has 7 inner strings... the cheap version looks the same on the outside but has fluffy nylon crap on the inside.

Then I started looking for info on what applications Para Cord in the wilderness/survival is good for...

-Shelter Making
-Making a fire bow
-Use one of the 7 inner strings to snare animals, fishing line, I guess even stitches if you had to (although you'd need a needle), mending clothing/canvas (also need a needle with a big eye)
-Tying, Binding things
-Affixing a knife to a length of wood for a spear
-Clothes lines
-Tool Handles/Grips
-Lanyards
-Suspending a tarp over your tent
-Lifting your backpack of food up over a branch out of a bear's reach

----------------------------

What do you use Para Cord 550 for?

I think its a useful material/tool... but some of these websites/videos make it sound like if you don't have any, you're gonna die with out it!

-----------------------------

We have plans next week for our CubScout group to make some of those 550 para cord bracelets... I think when finished, you've got about 4-5 ft. of cord contained in the bracelet, or more if you're an adult?

I have been meaning to wrap the cheek side of my Yugo underfolder with para cord. There were instructions on the old site...I never saved it. What is a good place to buy the good version?

I just bought 300 feet of:

Seven Strand Paracord 300' Spool Black Seven Strand Paracord 300' Spool Black
Sold by: Army Universe (seller profile)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41gGtG5SD6L._SX385_.jpg

... for $28.95 delivered off of Amazon.com

I don't know if that's a good price or not, but I had a $25.00 Amazon.com gift card from Christmas... so I used it.

I just bought and used up one of those 300' rolls, and I actually did wrap my M92 stock in it as well.

Thanks Mark. I'll hold my nose and go over there and check it out! Are there multi-colored cords or would I need 2 rolls?

Wow, that's a new one for me... with the bowl or empty bottle, do you have to dig hole so that the bowl/bottle is below the water level? Its better than nothing, but filtration... does it keep the lake/pond/creek microbes out enough that' you'd be relatively safe?

I saw on man-vs-wild (yes I know that guy can be a joke), I saw him take a hollow reed, stuff some grass-campfire charcoal-grass into the end of the reed and he was sipping water directly from a pond or something.... so I'm wondering how safe the para cord filtered water would be? Bacteria... no. Eggs, Ghiardia, amoeba's, parameciums, etc... I'm thinking maybe?

This word means no. It always means no. In every application it is an anagram for the worst case scenario.

Will this gun work when I need it to? Maybe.
Is this water safe to drink? Maybe.
Are you on birth control? Maybe.

Granted there are situations where it may be preferable to drink contaminated water(all water is considered contaminated) than die of dehydration but you should be aware, that para 550 cord ain't doing you any favors and the water should be boiled.

I was hoping I'd find a post that showed an underfolder wrapped with para cord. I think I'm going to wrap mine with some kind of design with 2 different colors. I have been making keychains/novelty items with para cord for several months and plan on making/selling them online in whatever color and style the person wants. Here are a few keychains and a collar and leash for my dog.
