OK... what would you call a device that has the following characteristics:

(1) Uses carbon based fuel and oxygen oxidizer
(2) Has a a frame made of strong material
(3) Is liquid cooled
(4) Generates exhaust
(5) Generates waste heat
(6) Is computer controlled
(7) Contains various sensors
(8) Contains dual redundant 3 axis gyros for stability
(9) Is hinged to allow movement
(10) Contains actuators to move various parts

Well, what is it?

Gyros?? :DYeah, you know, those funny gizmos in your inner ear that helps you to know which way is up. We used to call them the saccule and the utricle but gyros sounds more technical. :madnoel:

Yup. http://drharris.ucsd.edu/Portals/0/inner%20ear%20detail.jpg

See the three semicircular canals? Each one perpendicular to the other. Detects accelerations in all 3 axises.

Well, usually a "gyro" consists of spinning masses that provide an inertial reference. But there are "gyros" that do not spin at all. Like the inner ear, for one.

Another is the ring laser gyro. A laser is sent down two opposing fiber optic rings and where they meet the two light beams heterodyne (beat) together, resulting in a sum, a difference, original 1 and original 2.

Standing still, the difference beat is zero. But move the ring and the light is doppler shifted, one side higher and the other side lower. The resulting beat frequency (and phase) determines the delta-V of the gyro relative to the speed of light and the direction, respectively.

Clever invention... no moving parts, no drift or precession... much better than spinning tops. :)

The utricle and saccule are the static sensors and respond principally to changes in linear acceleration (particularly that caused by gravity) and control posture and balance.

I guess it "does" generate heated gas and waste after you eat it....
