Taken the SKS out for its monthly cleaning and I noticed this gouge down the side , I checked the bolt and carrier there was no signs of damage on them but only here . If ya take your fingernail you can feel the flared out steel on it.

Could it have been there and you never noticed? I mean that would take a lot of force to create.

I bought this SKS a few years ago from a gun store and really havent shot it much I think your right i just never really noticed it. , I shot it maybe a total of 6 or 7 times. Its in real awesome condition except for that flaw, . Heres another pic, looks like the carrier is offset just a tad which might be the culprit, oh well it still shoots ,just hate that its worn like that.

I've got a Romanian SKS with a similar "gouge". I always thought it was just where the rifle wears over time. I think the bolt carrier just barely scrapes it every time, and since its been a round since 1958, its been scraped a lot. Its still accurate and totally reliable.

Oh my god what a beautiful gem!! That's a steal for that rifle too isn't it? I'd imagine a true russian that hasn't been molested by bubba has gotta be worth a good chunk more than that right?

Hmmm... Made me go down and fish mine out of the safe. I've got a 1950 Tula. Same deal on usage. Hasn't had much. Mine doesn't seem to have the gouge, but the clearance on the left is much less than the right. Looking at your pix, it almost looks like you caught a spent cartridge case with the bolt. Once there, the matching burr on the bolt face wore against the receiver. Check to see if there is a burr on the bolt face and take a sharpening stone to it to stone it down. Use a very fine sharpening stone. It'll look like a piece of marble. Takes very little off at a swipe. You can also touch up the receiver too. That should help with any more metal remodeling. It will also keep your bolt from wobbling as it strikes the receiver too.

I have a Russian as well and have not had that problem but i have had to reposition the bolt once while i was firing it and it did no damage so
