View Full Version : Applied for a Government Job tonight...

Well, wish me luck...

I applied on-line tonight for a government job with the National Park Service.
There is an opening about 20 miles from my house for a Park Guide.

Basically I just put on a ranger uniform and walk tourists around saying this is a tree, this is a rock, this is where such and such happened in history, etc....
And I'd have to teach classes of lil kids about wilderness stuff.

It's a seasonal job 6 months a year with winters off.
Coming back again the following year is based on budget, so it's never a sure thing.
But even if it only last 6 months, I'll at least get my foot in the door with the Park Service.

I'm not earning anything now at all except my retirement check, so an extra $14 bucks an hour plus over-time for 6 months would be nice.

They say it can take up to 45 days before I even hear anything back.
But oh well.
SHIT man....it took like 5 hours to fill out all the paperwork and upload the documentation needed to qualify.
I meet the qualifications, so who knows?
On the other hand, it's possible a million damn people applied too and I'll just get lost in the mix.

But what the hell right. It's worth a shot.

Good luck!
That sounds pretty lame of a job to some, but to me its my dream job...
I'm trying to get on with the forest service right now, and the only park service jobs close to me are volunteer.

Work half the year, some spending money, bennys, and to be outside all day, thats awesome!

That sounds like a great retirement job. Spend time outdoors, talking to children. You might really enjoy it.

Good luck.

I'm not sure.
It just says park ranger uniform must be worn.
It doesn't specifically mention the hat either way....LMFAO

I guess part of it is inside and part is outside.
It says you must be able to walk 6 miles minimum per day (so this is the guide part)
The other part has something to do with visitor info.
I don't know if the kids classes are inside or out?

Yes.
I got to claim 5 points Veterans Pref.
Disabled Vets can claim 10 points if they have the supporting documentation.

You also had to have at least 12 CH of American History and/or History of some sort.
I have exactly 12 CH....lol
I just made it there.

LOL, back in the 70's I applied for FBI firearms instructor.....took 5 months for a guy to call with "Welcome to the Bureau".(SIC).....downgraded from a GS16 to a GS5.......just got married and I declined...could not survive in Quantico on a 5!
Lotta PC stuff and you have NO opinions when Gvt employed!Still, good luck!As I remember, 26K+ applied for 2 slots....would have involved a lot of travel and demos....something I would have loved!Had my interview at office in Colorado Springs and was fingerprinted...

I would love to see Swampy teaching a bunch of 4th graders! That would be priceless.

Good luck. It actually sounds pretty cool. If you get hired we will have to do a GN weekend and have you tour us around! Wait, that is even scarier than having you teach 4th graders!

Sounds like a great job. My cousin was doing something similar. When AZ had to make all the cutbacks, his job was cut along with rest areas being closed, etc, etc, etc. it sure will be nice when we recover and get all our amenities back.
He loved the Job. He still talks about the archery classes and other stuff he was teaching the kids.
You should be a shoe in for it. Good luck!

Yeah man!
I'm thinking the first class I'll teach will be how Poison ivy, sumac and oak is actually good for you if you eat it.

Yep. The budget cuts thing is a big downside.
Even if I get this, it could still only last 6 months.
Bummer.....

If you see an old duffer with a white beard and crutches and a 44 mag on his left hip butt forward leave me alone.

Besides I already know that if its brown on the bottom and green on top it's likely to be a tree.

Don't forget to tell the little munchkins that the little furry creatures running around are very tasty if they are baked right and have the proper sauce.

Hell no I won't leave you alone!

If I see you walking around, I'm going to drag you into one of my classes.
That way, when I'm explaining to the kids things that happened in The Paleolithic Era, I can point to you as an example and visual aid.

I'm NOT 100% positive, because the job listing didn't specify exactly...
It just said Fort Scott, National Park Service.
But this "may" be where the job is at?
Fort Scott is not very big, so it's quite possible.
Looks fun!
Check out this website!

http://www.nps.gov/fosc/index.htm

Forging A Nation-The Story of Fort Scott
Promises made and broken! A town attacked at dawn! Thousands made homeless by war! Soldiers fighting settlers! Each of these stories is a link in the chain of events that encircled Fort Scott from 1842-73. All of the site's structures, its parade ground, and its tall-grass prairie bear witness to this era when the country was forged from a young republic into a united transcontinental nation.

Truthfully it sounds like the type of job the gov't needs to cut out. Do we really need to pay people to escort tourist around and point out what a tree is? It's no wonder as a nation we are in debt.

I guess you didn't look at the website I posted.
There is a lot going on there.
Tourism brings in money to small towns like Ft Scott.
People will pay fees and whatnot that the Park Service gets, true.
But after the tours, they'll also shop in private stores, eat lunch, etc at privately owned places while they are there.
A whole lot of people are volunteers there too.

If I had to pick one job that should be cut, it would be to get rid of as many lawyers as possible first.

O.S.O.K.

I believe that job would require him to BYOT. (bring your own tambourine)
I don't like the haircut so much.
And, orange is not my color.
I'll just stay a civilian.
