I have a lengthy newspaper article saved from about 2 years ago about Mr Buckles, truly the last of his generation of American soldiers.

I was fortunate enough to know my Great Grandfather for a brief time,he too was a WWI vet.

WW I and then fought in WW II. A POW of the Japanese for three years. Plainly this man was made of stronger stuff !

He was a civilian working for a shipping company in the Phillipines when the war started. He was interned with the other civilians at the Los Baņos internment camp until Feb. 1945 when they were rescued in a raid by the 11th airborne division.
