I know that some of you have faced this problem before, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Was it NY or PA where some newspaper had posted on their website the personal info of CC holders?

This was reported on KMOX Radio this morning, so I contacted Madigan's office in the Belleville area.

They transferred me to "Constituent Services" in Springfield. I was told that their phone number there is 217-782-9394 and I talked with a Mr. Mike Matulis.

He explained that the Associated Press request does follow "case law" and is a legitimate request. He also informed me that he does believe that the ISP intends to fight this in the courts. He also informed me that there is at least one bill (possibly two) in the State House that would amend the law to KEEP the FOID records "non-public".

Mr. Matulis suggested that we contact all the politicians we can, even if they are not our own, to urge them to support these measures.

Here is the home page for the AG's office. There is a "Contact Us" link at the top right.

Illinois State Rifle Association Asks Attorney General Madigan to Reconsider Ruling on Information Release

March 3, 2011

(GunReports.com) -- The Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) is asking Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to reconsider a ruling handed down today that directs the Illinois State Police to release the names and other personal information belonging to the state's 1.3 Million firearm owners. The ruling comes in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request filed by news organizations who wish to list the names of firearm owners in newspapers and other publications.

Information subject to the FOI request is maintained in the Firearm Owners Identification card (FOID) database which tracks personal information belonging to persons who hold FOID cards. Since its inception in the mid-1960s, information in the FOID database has been considered confidential and not subject to release by the State Police. Today's ruling by Attorney General Madigan is a dramatic departure from that tradition.

State Rifle Association Secures Temporary Restraining Order Against Release Of Firearm Owners’ Personal Information

PEORIA, IL --(Ammoland.com)- The ISRA is pleased to announce that it has secured a temporary restraining order against the release of personal information belonging to persons holding Illinois Firearm Owner Identification cards (FOID).

The ISRA and four additional plaintiffs filed for the temporary restraining order after Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced that her office believes that release of FOID information to the public is proper (http://www.ammoland.com/2011/03/02/illinois-attorney-general-wants-to-expose-your-firearms-id-card-information/) under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.

Good news, even better news would be if they would dispense with the FOID program altogether and go back to the days when citizens were able to buy whatever they could afford and legitimately defend themselves from the bad guys. FOID does not appear to have had any effect on the outlaws obtaining any gun they want, just the good guys.

I would bet that if the same group that wanted to release the names of FOID owners were to print a list of all the criminals who, illegally, used firearms in the commission of felonies, the ACLU would be on that in a heartbeat, defending the "rights" of criminals. They would use the excuse that their rights were being violated by the printing of that list.

Things have a way of going from good to bad, from bad to worse, from worse to just plain stupid.

Lisa Madigan is a corrupt Democrat Machine hack just like her old man, IL Speaker of the House Mike Madigan.

This whole thing with releasing the names of FOID card holders was DOA pretty much from the start. The Illinois State Police were willing to go to the Supreme Court to fight it.

I would like to have seen who on that list is an anti-gunner. Illinois has no shortage of "laws-for-thee-but-not-for-me" hypocrites.

This is why there shouldn't be any "FOID" cards or govt. registration of any kind.

The citizens of the commie states need to take to the streets. You are the ones that allow this shit to go on.

SPRINGFIELD -- Holders of Firearm Owner’s Identification cards need only Gov. Pat Quinn's signature before their names are safe from public-records requests.

The Illinois Senate Friday approved a measure to exempt those records from the state’s Freedom of Information Act.
