Regardless if you think Bear Gryllis is a retard or not... I bought one of these knives for camping....

$50 bucks off Amazon.com... the sheath holds fire starting stick to strike against the blade, the pommel is serrated/textured metal to use as a hammer, the thumb guard hilt has two holes in it for lashing it to a spear and between the plastic sheath and nylon webbing, there's a diamond sharpening plate on the back...

All in all, for $50 bucks.... this is one well thought out fantastic knife!

Wish I would have asked you guys first now, and here I thought I found a winner...

The LMF II knife is over $100 bucks though:

Guess you get what you pay for... for $50 bucks, it will be just fine in the campsite... IF I plan to ever trek through the bush and my life depends on a sharp blade and a good handle, the BG knife would not be it...

My 7 year old son thinks its cool though :)

+1

Everyone's idea of "survival" is different. Mine just doesn't include knives like that one.

I've had the LMF for years and while it's not bad (IIRC you can get it for around $80) it's not my favorite.

For a hard use woods knife I'd suggest something made by ESEE

http://www.knifeworks.com/ESEEcutlerymodel6.aspx

Or Becker

http://www.knifeworks.com/ka-barbecker.aspx

I have the Becker BK2 and it's a hell uva knfe. An ESEE RC6 is on my "to get" list as is the DPX HEST fixed blade

And there's not a thing wrong with that. Don't let what it isn't detract from what it is.

My son has a whole collection of knives that I thought would suit my needs and later found out that they didn't. It'll give him something to learn with.

I have a LMF, and I would trust my life with it. Holds a great edge and I have abused.the sucker camping for a while now.

Yea, that knife is a usefull as BG himself.

I own two knives that I would consider survival worthy.
LMF II already pictured here.
( my only con with this knife is the weight and size, its too massive for a camping hiking knife for me, but it would be what I would grab if I needed a end of the world knife)
And a Ontario Rat 3.

This little guy is great for fishing, hiking and just general everyday wear!

I use the hell out of my LMF camping, the weight makes it great for hacking thicker branches for shelter and fire, also a hell of a hammer using the backside of the blade.

I agree it is too big for fine cutting jobs, that I leave to the Leatherman.

Exactly, I would probaly have my trusty Stockman with me... posibly my Byrdrench... And likely my 110.

I know they aren't the sharpest but I still think for an economical survival knife that an AKM bayo is hard to beat. Durable as hell. I'd be fine with one of those and a leatherman.

I'm kinda surprised that Gerber and Gryllis would put out such a piece of crap - that pommel should be integral with the blade metal.

He's becoming the laughing stock of the survival world.

The idea though - from a marketing perspective is very sound and will probably be profitable regardless. Most people aren't going to be reading the reviews prior to purchasing. I saw these being sold at REI in Austin - they usually test things before they sell them... but I think they've changed that way in recent years.

Is a Buckmaster too big for a survival knife? :)

I'd probably take my M16 bayonet for survival, along with my Buck 110 on my belt. I keep a POS pocket knife in my front pocket for bullshit work too, like sharpening pencils.

I have a chance to pick this knife up for around $25.00. Is it any good?

I'll take it! Good steel - I like the pry tip = they are so right about that.

$25? Hell yeah! How can you go wrong? Look at the reviews. That's a good brand too from what I've seen.

I thought so too O.S. but I don't know much about knives. With the reviews I have read, I figured it was worth the small gamble. I'll let everyone know what i think of it if I end up getting it.

The steel in that kinfe is 1.4116 which is a German manufactured stainless steel. Pretty common in kitchen cutlery and comparable to 440A. For $25 it might not be a bad deal but in the 440 class I'd stay with 440C at a good heat treat as a minimum. With that one I can almost guarantee that even though it might sharpen easily it will take less time to dull it then it did to sharpen.

Still for the money enjoy it, have fun with it and build on it.

I just was flipping through the channels and ran across his show. He was in Borneo and was carrying his knife. In several shots they included the knife prominently.

I wonder if he knows what a piece of schit it is... maybe not! It would be funny to see him go to hammer something with that cheesy pommel and have it break off. :lool:

Very poor business to put your name on such a crappy product - also very poor of Gerber to produce a cheap product.

I'm sure they'd edit that out.

I like 'survivor man' alot better. Bear seems to show you how to get killed in a survival situation, not survive. Cody Lundin is pretty cool, too.
