I believe you are correct. What happened may be documented in detail but it will never be made public. The answers could be simple or complex but I doubt we will ever hear them.

USS YP-278 was a fishing trawler converted to an ocean-going refrigerator ship for the United States Navy used to distribute food supplies in the Pacific during World War II.USS Liberty was identified as a US naval ship by Israeli reconnaissance aircraft nine hours before the attack and continuously tracked by Israeli radar and aircraft thereafter. Sailing in international waters at less than five knots, with no offensive armament, our ship was not a military threat to anyone.

It had nothing to do with military threat and everything to do with the fact that they were an intelligence gathering ship and Israel didn't want some of their communications intercepted. Remember when this happened and think 6 day war. We could have stopped it but politicians made the decisions and if you want to know what I think of Johnson and McNamara who put the Liberty where Israel didn't want it just look up some of my old posts on the subject.

Don't study the attack, study the 6 day war for the reasons. Yeah, its still a sore point with me.
