View Full Version : Finally, Doing My First Build And Have A Few Q's!

OK, so far I've gotten the trigger guard and front & rear tunnions riveted on the receiver. It is a AK-74M build.

Couple of things I'm a bit fuzzy about:

1. As far as pressing the barrel back in, I do have a hyd press, but no kind of fixture for supporting the rec/trunnion. What is the easiest way to install the bbl?

2. Will freezing the bbl and gently heating the trunnion make it easier?

3. When I do the gunkote should I finish the inside of the Receiver?

That's all I can think of right now, unless someone can think of something I'm not seeing!

TIA

1. also have a press, but for bbl install, i still prefer teh all thread method. in a pinch the carrier can be used as a jig for this method, although i dont like that idea myself.

2. yes, but only for a few seconds. probably not long enough for you to finish teh install. the temps will equalize a lot quiker than you think.

3. i usualy try to get little bit of spray into the receiver, just for rust protection.

This is what I use. I'll see it I can get you a pic of it outside of the receiver.
It does an excellent job of supporting the trunnion.

You mean using an all-thread rod to draw the bbl into the trunnion? That sounds like a simple way to do it.

I like the look of this, I have some 1" steel blocks, just nee to see if I can fabricate something workable from what I have. Unfortunately, I left most of my metal at the house in Idaho!

I forgot all about getting a pic. I'll see what I can do today.

BTW, if you have any kits to demill, this is the handiest jig for supporting the trunnion while pressing out the barrel pin. The pin is pressed out before the receiver stub is removed. The rivet heads fit into the holes on the plate and the pin falls through the raised area.

Well, as fate would have it, I can't find the tool.
The tool's base is 1/2"x 1-1/4". The cylinder is solid and big enough to span the trunnion's face with a concave face so the barrel will clear the tool.
If I ever find the tool, I'll post some pics.
