OK, picked it up this morning and here are the pics:

As I unpacked it: Surprise! Two nice EB steel mags (was supposed to come with 1 crapco mag) and the very experienced, frogless bayo.

And it is a 10/63:

The wood handguards are actually very nice and solid - should look good after a little TLC:

And after I whiped it off some and inserted a mag:

This is a very nice Romanian AKM. I think this is actually a cut above the SAR's in fit and finish. Everything is straight and the park is even. The receiver insides were clean and free of machining shavings, etc. The bore is excellent. The UF stock is stiff and locks up well, folds flush. Safety aligns with dust cover. The TAPCO marked trigger is actually very good with a decent, clean break.

Overall, at this point, I'm very happy with this purchase. For $399, I can't complain a bit!

We'll see how she does at the range.

Thanks and thanks for the group invite - accepted!

Yeah, this really is nice - thank you all that posted your reviews otherwise, I wouldn't have ordered this one - and right after I did, they went out of stock and increased the price...

But I think classic arms still has em in stock.

I screwed a tapco ar birdcage on the muzzle... hmm not sure about it. I also did a quick clean, very light sanding, spirit stain and wood wax finish on the handguards. Basically look a little darker/redder. I also installed a Rusky sling on her.

Congratulations. Always thought an underfolder would be cool and at that price I really don't have any excuse not to get one. Wonder what kind of wood it is? Looks a little bit like the maple stock set I got once from Ironwood Designs just not quite as rich or as yellow.

Birtch I think. Not dense enough for maple...

Ok Ok,

ETA: This was just a quicky job. I hate bare wood. I think I may mix up some Rit Dye stain for this and put some satin poly over it. It still looks a little anemic...

What do you mean comrad? "Slanted underfolder"? :D

Awesome looking piece! I have the exact same gun and re-did the handguards in "Russian Red"...turned out really nice...also gave me the confidence to replace the black pistol grip with a wood one, finished in Russian Red to match the handguards. Very happy with the results. We've shot about 800 rounds thru it so far without a problem, love to shoot it!! I replaced the slant muzzle brake with an AK-74 style one, but haven't shot it yet to see the difference, looks cooler though...

Can you be more specific on the process and exact products you used to do the wood?

Thanks.

I just removed the wood - used an adjustable wrench to hold the ass-end of the metal on the gas tube and rotated the wood off of it. Lightly sanded both top and bottom pieces. Degreased with acetone and then applied "old military" spirit stain (avail from brownells). After it dried in about 15 mins, I applied some treewax floor wax with carnuba and let it dry - then buffed. Reassembled.

I have almost purchased a couple of these probably 10x now... this thread isn't helping me stay away. :lool:

Just curious though... why the birdcage break?

I mean the downward angle of the underfolding stock. Most underfolders I see are the straight type.

I'm just curious as to how it shoots with the downward angle stock.

Birdcage - because I like it and it's just a screw-on thing.

Downward angle stock? This folds straight back when open. I can post a pick of it locked open - but it's a standard UF stock...

And I haven't shot it yet - hoping I can get to the range this weekend and give it a whirl.

Thats interesting. Most look like this:

As apposed to the straight style, like:

I am on the road.

I suppose that it is a normal rommie folder and has some drop.

When I've held it up and sighted it, it felt "natural". My Russian type 3 also has drop in it's stock.

I'd have to say that for normal use with the iron sights, I prefer the stocks with a bit of drop.

NP Wolfpack. Recon, I have to reiterate that I was not big fan of of the WASR's - but these 10/63 models are really very nice. The workmanship is very good on them.

The triggers which used to be century carapola are now the very good G-2's. The mag cut-out is snug. The alignment of the various blocks is much better than the SAR's too.
