Assembly orders sergeants-at-arms to carry guns full time

The state Assembly has stepped up its security measures, ordering more than a dozen sergeants-at-arms to carry guns while on the job.

"Please be advised that as of March 31, 2011, the Assembly Sergeants-at-Arms Security Division will be carrying department-issued Smith & Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic weapons full-time while they are on duty for the Assembly," Assembly Chief Sergeant-at-Arms Ronald Pane wrote in a March 31 letter (http://http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/Gunsletter.pdf) to Senate Chief Sergeant-at-Arms Tony Beard, Jr.

Assembly OKS concealed guns for four legislators

Assembly Chief Sergeant-at-Arms Ronald Pane has given four legislators permission to carry concealed weapons in the state Capitol, according to two senior Senate (http://get.lingospot.com/link/?@li2=10219&is_lhid=0&key=ATPUCNWCXV&portal_key=3_Sacbee&ps_id=lzIn0rtoga&q=QQ:lqOTqjptCQ@H@GUHHAIORJJODZBOPSZVOqptJ:pnCGOqm j_J:pnCPO4aJm8CHHDRA:GAHUKVV&section_key=&site_id=&url=http%3A%2F%2Ftopics.sacbee.com%2Fsenate%2F&url_key=_TaCSO0CAB[ZHZZHIK&v=1&~boot=1302336330312) staff members who have been informed of the decision.

State law prohibits carrying loaded firearms and deadly weapons in public buildings, except under limited conditions. A 2010 bill by Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani, D-Livingston, tightened the law, requiring that most holders of concealed weapons permits or other gun licenses get permission from the sergeants-at-arms of the state Assembly or the state Senate in order to bring their gun in the Capitol or legislative office buildings. Peace officers are exempt from the restrictions.

SACRAMENTO (KABC) -- The debate over gun control is being re-ignited at the state Capitol. Four state assembly members who had been given permission to carry concealed weapons are now under orders to check their guns at the door.

Some state lawmakers are starting to question their safety, and now there are discussions over whether they should be able to carry guns.
