Welcome to the group, Midwest !!! :welcome:

Apex Gun Parts used to have some of the Romanian Wieger mags for the SAR-3. Most people can't get the spelling right, and the people of Wiesa, Germany have stopped making the mag until people understand why! Just kidding.

They are hard to come by, but easily recognized if you find one as they are the only AK .223/5.56x45 mag that has two round floorplate release buttons. So far I have not heard of anyone else making a mag for the SAR-3 that works as well as the mag the rifle was designed to use.

The AK-74 mags can be modified by changing the shape of the feed lips and installing a follower that as far as I know is only made by Robinson.

It is too bad that there never was a standard mag for the .223 AK as there is for the 7.62x39.

As for why the heavier bullet weight? I don't know, hopefully romak10/63UF will fill us in. :)

The 55 gr lead bullets will give you incosistent groupings at 100 yrds Your better off useing the heavier bullet weights in 223 aka 5.56 nato. Like the 62 grain an above . You will need to see what grain bullets your rifleing likes most. If i were you i would buy 60 to 80 rounds of both 55gr lead fmj an 60 to 80 rounds of the 62 grain fmj an try each one out see what better suits your rifle.

I know the ak-47 7.62x39 was intended to use the steel core fmj ammo witch will give you better groupings out to 300 yards.:preach:

Nope, no drums for the STG-940 rifle system that I know of. (The Wieger STG-940 system was where the Romanians got their mags for the SAR-3)

Do you know how much the sar 3 is worth?

They are selling for between $400 and $500. If you look at Gunbroker, there are people asking more, but they don't sell for the higher prices even if they have a bunch of stuff to go with them.

Oh, you can use the AK-74 mag without the Robinson follower as long as you open the feed lips a bit and don't load over 20 rounds.

Been looking around, suddenly once again the SAR-3 Wiegers have disappeared.

I guess I will patrol the local gun shows and keep looking. I took it out today and shot it for the first time I really like it I will have alot of fun with it even more once I find a good 30 round clip hopefully. It came with a 10 round but 30 would be better.

OK - found this: http://www.k-var.com/shop/product.php?productid=16138&cat=420&page=1

It is Bulgarian .223, 30 rounds and they have black or clear for $26 a pop.

Bulgy mags are of very good quality.

I believe they work great with the SAR-3 - but I will throw that one out to the boys here to confirm...

Well now for another point of view. My SAR-3 has always done better with 55 gr. M193 ball vs. the 62 gr. M855 ball ammo. True it has a fast enough twist to do heavy bullets but I guess the thin whipy barrel likes the 55 gr. better.

To the original question on mags; Weigers always work. Bulgarian waffle type 5.56 mags work in the majority of Sar-3 rifles but not all. Robinson Armament use to make a 5.56 follower to put in a 5.45x39 mag to convert it to reliable feeding of 5.56 ammo. I would first look at the Bulgarian mags, then if I couldn't find them or they didn't work I'd look at the follower mod to 5.45 mags. The 5.45 casing has more taper to it so the stock follower leaves the rim of the 5.56 cases sitting too low to feed much more than 10 or 12 rounds out of an unmodified 5.45 magazine.

Dont go to heavy with a sar3 though. Like the 75 gr black hills stuff ect... the cases continually rupture, break right in half in my SAR3 chamber.

Hi all...first post and a new sar-3 owner. Funkypertwee is correct apex has weigers in for $30 bucks a pop. A little more than what I wanted to pay but having a rock solid mag setup that I know was made for the gun works for me. Now to get my RSA trigger and hammer in.....

Welcome to gunsnet. You should try a Bulgarian waffle 5.56 mag in your SAR-3. Mine works flawlessly with them, every bit as good as the Weigers.
