Hey, I just wanted to mention that I just bought a couple of Mora companion knives from SPG - $25 for two. They came quickly and I have to say that I am really impressed with them. They are carbon steel which is a first for me and "modern" knives (have some old Green River cs knives). But the thing is very nice and sharp as hell. Also the blade is quite sturdy.

These have a "cult" following -and I can see why now.

I recommend them to the forum :)

The 44 Mag cartridge was added to show scale.

Forgive my ignorance, but carbon steel... i'm assuming that it means it will hold an edge longer?

The handle looks nylon, what about the thumb guard and pommel... are they plastic or metal?

$25 bucks... looks like a great survival knife and sharp enough to cut and gut a deer, then rinse off in the creek?

Actually it's two knives for $25 which is a great deal. Congrats O.S.O.K. and thanks for posting the pics.

As far as carbon steel versus stainless holding an edge also depends on the heat treat of the steel and edge geometry but you are right, CS should hold the edge better than stainless. It's also harder to sharpen.

I had a chance to handle these and I like them. I would have bought the same from Sportsman's Guide if I hadn't just gotten a Coleman (yeah, the stove n' lantern folks) that's about the same size or a little smaller, also sharp as hell, and has a THICK full tang.

When I was a teenager and in my first couple years in the service I liked bigass Rambo knives. A wise old NCO squared me away. He carried the leather-handled aircrew survival knife and said that was a big a knife as you should ever need unless you need a full machete. Experience since then has convinced me he was right.
