Gas Piston length adjustment

Hey guys, I stripped down the AK and noticed that the gas piston has an adjustment nut that allows it to be extended roughly 1/4''. I realize that tapco probably made it that way to accomodate different varient lengths but is there a certain way I should have it for my Norinco?

is it an adjustment nut or a washer? ive seen some newer ones come with a 1/4" spacer/washer.

the replacment piston should equal the same lengh as teh one your replacing.

Im not replacing it... I just noticed that it was loose and I wanted to know how long/where it should be..

it should be loose, and it also should be pinned so that you CANNOT turn it either way.
