Hey guys I'm looking for some advice. I am currently trying to decide on what kind of semi automatic rifle I should purchase. I already have a Ruger SR556 and an Arsenal SGL21. I am currently trying to decide between an SGL31 and an M4 style AR15. My budget is 1300 and below. Also, I would like to know which caliber you guys prefer in general: 5.56 NATO or 5.45 Soviet. Let me know what you think!
Thanks

Welcome to the group !!! :welcome:

Everyone needs a good M4gery!

Of course, since you already have a 7.62x39 variant, you do need a 5.45x39 also!

In short, I guess get one of each. With $1300 to spend you should be able to pull it off. :thumbspbig:

A good bolt gun and some glass, it seems you have the ''assault rifle'' style covered well. Or maybe both like nut said.

For $1300... my vote would be for a PTR91 in .308... I'm with AkTexas on this one... .308 of some flavor.

PTR91 - $1099

Mags are only $5 bucks... ammo is expensive though.

Imbel FAL - $799

What's the main purpose of the rifle? SHTF? IF I had to choose between an AR15 and a PTR91, I think I'd choose the PTR91... all my AR's are sighted in at 100 yards, my 308's are sighted in at 200... and the only reason for 200 is because I have clear line of sight for 200 yards down to the "gate" at the entrance to our neighborhood from my back porch.

You already have a 5.56 rifle... you NEED a .308. AND for $169, you can get a 50 round drum for the PTR91 ;)

I like .308's... they were designed to "reach out and touch someone"... assess your community/location and when SHTF where you might have to shoot from and what targets you might have to potentially engage, if there's any considerable distance between YOU and THEM (whoever 'them' may be).... you'd rather have a .308...

After 15 years of collecting weapons, buying/selling/trading... it is only now that I feel comfortable buying some descent glass... I always figured "spend the money on guns they're gonna ban"... good hunting (read sniper) glass would hopefully always be available in future... for years now, I've used inexpensive BSA scopes on my rifles, and its only now that I've been swapping them out every once in a while for Leupold Scopes.

As for the 5.56 vs. 5.45 soviet... I prefer 5.56. I practice/play with Wolf ammo... but I keep a good supply of brass SS109 on hand for my M4. I also have an AR chambered in 5.45x39, I bought this S&W upper strictly because 5.45 ammo was so blessedly cheap! But its dirty and corrosive... good fun plinking, but you have to clean every time you shoot it.

You already have a Ruger SR556:

That rifle is already pretty much bad to the bone right there... what do you need an M4gery (a real M4 has a 14.5" upper and is an SBR, most of us have 16" uppers)?

When you decide on what rifle you want to buy... don't forget to check http://www.gunbroker.com... you can likely find one of the above .308's maybe a hundred bucks cheaper (no sales tax if bought out of state, but will have to be shipped to your local FFL)... as for the glass, same thing, gunbroker might be cheaper, but I usually buy new from http://www.swfa.com

Forgot... Welcome to the board :)

well I also have a Remington 700 30-06. I'm just torn between the SGL31 and an M4 style AR15. After the purchase of either one, I would turn my SR556 into a designated-marksman rifle.

How about a MSAR bullpup?

Ok then, M4 would be a good addition to your Ruger, 2 5.56 rifles would be good to have, for mags and ammo commonality. 2 is 1 1 is none.

Every gun owner should have an M4 type gun in their collection but you already have one, and I still would have said get the SGL31 even if you didn't. It's a very high quality gun and 5.45 is the last of the cheap surplus.

.308 battle rifles are great as well and I've been tempted to get one of the DSA Imbel FALs but .308 guns are a pain in the ass (and by that I mean wallet region) to shoot right now unless you reload. And with iron sights I can't hit a target any better with .308 than I can with a .223.

As the saying goes; "Buy it cheap and stack it deep". My SAR-2 is about the only gun outside a .22 I can take to the range and go blasting without any remorse which in turn means I am quite proficient with it.

If only Bushmaster/Remington would come out with a 5.45 ACR kit with the AK mag kit I'd be a very happy camper.

I'd get the SLR-31. Its one of the most accurate AKs out there & is out of production. Its value will only go up.

ARs are still being made. Vepr also makes a decent .308.

I went with .223, 7.62x39, .308 and .22 of course, but recently sold off the .308 (cetme CAI build) POS and
decided on a lever gun Winchester 94 in 30-30, the little shit has some reach!, Gonna get some good glass
on it. Otherwise I have at least 2 of each caliber and 12ga, good to go.

Have you thought about the 300 AAC Blackout? I have one, ammo is a little harder to find but its has its positives. Shoots a 7.62x35mm out of a shortened 5.56x45mm NATO. Super sonic rounds hit hard and subsonic with a silencer is quite!! I have the S&W M&P15 300 AAC Blackout and shot my buddies AAC silencer and legit dont need hearing protection to say the least. Also seeing that it shoots the same case as the standard 5.56 you can use all the same parts as a regular AR, all that is different is the barrel. What I want to do is get a 5.56 upper so I essentially have one gun that shoots both a 22cal round and a 30cal and can be switched in seconds. I know there are other companies that sell a full gun that shoots the 300 AAc Blackout other than S&W in your price range but cant think of them off the top of my head.

just an idea you could get a cheaper AR and then buy a 300 AAC upper, in your range and have a gun that shoots different rounds and is interchangeable between the 2 in seconds. Or get a more expensive AR that shoots either of the bullets and later if you want , you can by the opposite round. This leaves options open if you ever want to expand.

Get an FAL or .308 AR-10. Welcome to the forum.

I second the fal, you only need one 5.56 but can never have enough .308's
