I happen to be reading an account of Tarawa the other day in a military magazine.

There were some 5,000 Imperial Japanese soldiers defending Tarawa and it's sister island Betio. After the battle 4,700 of them were KIA. 17 or 18 captured, the rest MIA.

Try reading Red Sun Rising by Toland. Those were a tough bunch of soldiers, but our men were better. God bless them.

I've heard good things about Toland's book before, I might put that on my "must read" summer list. Thanks for the reference.

My dad fought on Tarawa.
It's easy to see why he never liked talking about it.
