My 14 year old son and I were kayaking this weekend in the backwater swamps of the Little Maumelle River, a tributary of the Arkansas River. Though the water level is not as high as it has been, the Arkansas River is still backed up because of the high water in the Mississippi River downstream. As a result, seems the higher than normal water in the swamps have still not drained off.

While kayaking through the swamp we saw a lot of wildlife, but I ran across this fine specimen of a cottonmouth water moccasin. I was in a 9 foot kayak and this little brute was at least 2/3rds the length of my boat.

That is impressive. I have never seen one over 3', mostly in the 2' range. I know some who have seen 4' snakes but nothing like that one. I do believe that would have spooked me and I am not particularly snake shy. I would rather face a cobra then a cotton mouth. There is just something about snake/poison/water that makes me feel inadequate.

Kind of cool. I've never seen one before.

Desert rattle snakes are all I've ever run across and that was enough. I hate snakes. You guys in the other side of the Rockies can keep those cotton mouth things. )))shudder((

Beautiful but a nasty temper. Would make a beautiful belt. No munchin on it.

We have lots in coastal SC, and I agree I've never seen one like that! Good photo.

Nice un.
You do know they are famous for dropping out of trees into boats as they pass underneath? Ask me how I know.

Snakes don't bother me unless I'm cornered, like in a boat in snake infested waters.

Did you take a shot @ him w/ one of your GI carbines? :D

Yeah, nice belt or boot material.

I left this one unharmed. The swamp we were in was it's home territory and we were miles away from the closest civilization . . . plus I didn't want to make it mad.

That IS a big one! The mocasin is the only snake I know of in North America that will chase you.

Understandable, under the conditions. :bigsmilebounce:
