I know I'm not supposed to covet...

I still occasionally get emails from people asking for help identifying their Arisakas. More often than not someone thinks they have something unusual that turns out not to be. Recently, however, a guy sent me some pix that really raised my eyebrows. His father picked up the rifle in Tokyo after the war (the officers got all of the “good” stuff and he took some of the “junk” at the end). Turns out he picked up a very late, no serial, no series Tokyo Juki Kogyo with rope hole stock – mum intact. Needs a little clean up, but it’s one of the real “Holy Grails” of Arisaka collecting... I’ll see if he’ll let me post pix later.

This one is even rare for rope holes though... probably less than 100 out there... ever...

Doesn't appear to be a well made gun, is it. I am thinking the real worth is in the history of the weapon, correct?

It's crudely manufactured - yes. History of the weapon and scarcity dictate the value. The fact it has the mum intact also helps - especially for one of these ultra-rares

    Sure is rough looking.
Lately there has been a glut of Arisakas at local shows. I was at one last night and there were more Arisakas than anything else, one seller had a whole collection that had come from an estate. I even saw a couple of snipers.

Wow... Were the prices reasonable or were they "priced to keep"?

I see it is missing the front site ? Nice rare rifle none the less. Very cool to see one other than in a book.

    Mike,
I don't know much about Arisakas, they were 150 bucks and up, the two snipers were 3500 and 4000. Everywhere you turned there were Arisakas - it was unreal. Rifles, carbines, trainers...

Sounds about right for the snipers... if they had scopes...

Yep - I noticed that too - I think a couple of others from this batch I've seen have the same problem

I have heard that some of the rope type look like they never had a front sight installed. Maybe captured before being issued. Would make sence being so late in the war.

I've seen several pictures that bear that out... a lot of the rope holes are sans front sights...

Unfortunately I've only seen them in photos...

I am sitting here holding a Type 97 Sniper in my hands... awesome. Mum is filed off, has the brass muzzle cover, 4 digit serial from Kokoru, three ring arsenal mark. Dust cover, sling, scope, cleaning rod and bayonet would complete this rifle. I will post pics when I get home to my computer!
