Damn, I think this is a shame. I always liked the guy and his music, used to watch his show back in the late 60's when I was a kid. You don't hear his kind of easy-listening C&W on the radio or tv anymore.

Saw that on the news last night. The man still has a great voice, even at his age.

Alzheimer's has to be one of the worst diseases there is for caregivers. Unfortunately the patient doesn't know they have it because the real world slowly fades away, and you never know it.

My daughter is currently in Neuroscience research working on trying to find a cure for this horrible disease. It would be really nice to hear they found it before other great minds are lost.

While I don't know if substance abuse can lead to Alzheimer's, I do know someone who can verify, so I have emailed my daughter and will post her response when it arrives.

OK, just got the email from my daughter.

There is currently no evidence suggesting that substance abuse causes or is correlated to AD. As roughly 15% of the population over 65 and nearly 50% of the population over 85 have AD, it is not uncommon for someone who is 75 to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I completely agree with you that he was far from an angel, but that still doesn't change the fact that there is no correlation between alcohol and/or drug use and Alzheimer's.

Perhaps not a known one. Don't quote that as fact, exactly what causes or may contribute to Alzheimer's is pretty much a guess at best.

But if you choose to believe that cocaine and alcohol abuse lead to good health in your latter years, go for it.

Also, I didn't quote any interwebz legends, nor did I ignore any truth.
