The boys want to go squirrel hunting Friday.

My kids are off from school till this coming Monday, and they've decided they want to do some squirrel hunting. So, I guess I'll take em out Friday. I know a great spot that has both red and grey squirrels in abundance. Shouldn't be hard, given some time, to get a nice mess of squirrels.

I'll take the camera and bring back some pictorial evidence.

What kind of food do you like to make with squirrels?

Anyway, like I was sayin', squirrel is the fruit of the woods. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, squirrel-kabobs, squirrel creole, squirrel gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple squirrel, lemon squirrel, coconut squirrel, pepper squirrel, squirrel soup, squirrel stew, squirrel salad, squirrel and potatoes, squirrel burger, squirrel sandwich. That- that's about it.

What about squirrel pasta, squirrel pizza, and squirrel panini?

Squirrel enchiladas, squirrels in a blanket, and a Tur-Duck-squirrell for thanksgiving?

If it's a young squirrel, pan fry it like chicken. For a mature squirrel it's either squirrel and dumplings, or cook it with potatoes and mushroom soup. All 3 after soaking in salt water over night in the fridge. It's decent eating.

Saw a medium size gray out behind the house this morning but by the time I got nephew into some pants and shoes it was getting tired of waiting for us. Haven't seen any deer yet so I was hoping I would get him something at least.

The last two spots I sat on during rifle season had so damned many squirrels it was funny. Both red and gray. Damned red squirrels get big! During my last long sit I could have brought home at least a half dozen, just by picking them off with my .22 pistol from the blind. After I had been settled in for awhile they'd come within 6' of where I sat.

Exactly why I am bringing the 22 to the blind tomorrow. Not supposed to get snow till Sunday and that is the last day of gun season. Then I get to load up the black powder guns. Can't give up as long as I can still get out there.

Up north where I was raised the gray pretty much took over and not many reds left.
Still have them here but if the grays are growing in numbers I'd go after those and give the reds a little edge.
I've heard that the grays with castrate the reds in a tussle then let nature do the rest of the work

As far as I know, Otto. There are more of the grays, but the red squirrels are quite a bit bigger.

Our hunt was fun, but not very productive, the boys only shot two gray squirrels. Didn't see all that many, tho getting the boys to sit still and wait for em is kind of a challenge. What I need to do is the next time I take them deer hunting, where they know ol dad won't leave and go else ware in an hour, is to bring a .22 along.

    Thumbs up

Took my 6 year old out and shot 5 cottontails. We are having rabbit tomorrow in garlic n olive oil. With a spray of lemon juice. Old recipe from Spain. Along with french fries.

It's the bomb, and will be for them.

Cool. I've been saving the bunny hunting for sometime after our first snow.

If they are bigger than Eastern Grey squirrels, they are Fox squirrels not Red.

Red squirrels are about twice the size of a chipmunk.

As for the whole castration thing, I think that is a rural myth. E. Greys carry a disease that Red squirrles are not immune too.
Here's to pussy and gunpowder. One to live for, the other to die by.....Goddamn though, I do love the smell of 'em both !!!

Yep, they are Fox squirrels, but they get called red squirrels usual in these parts. The things can get huge when compared with a gray. But from what I've seen the two types seem to get along okay.

I'm just a little dissapointed in ya'll from the south for not mentioning gumbo. Anything can go in the gumbo pot. Two squirrels and some sausage would be enough meat...

And Jefferson... where's those pics you promised?

I would never have thought of gumbo, to me that always means shell fish or fish.
