trip planning: advise on hiking in Alaska......

So me and some buddies are planning another hiking trip this summer. MIGHT, drive back to Utah, go south into the Boulder Utah area and hike again. We have also thrown out the idea of ponying up the cash to fly to Anchorage, then do some hiking in Denali National Park. I am just curious what advice anyone here could give on it. Has anyone here hiked it? Been there? Hard to get permits? Things I should be aware of? It appeals to all of us, and each of us seems likely to be willing to pay to fly up there......

Or any BLM land up there thats good hiking, camping land?

I went on a little hike through Denali. Just a day hike in and out, nothing overnight. It is beautiful. Stop at the little visitor center and get the maps and pass or whatever. Its not expensive. BUT, everything else around there is. Food, gas ...everything cause its a tourist thing. They bus people from cruise ships up there.

Anyway, if you can manage it go before you die. It really is an awesome place. I wish I could have stayed a few days but I was up there for work and had to fly back the next day.

really, we want to hike and overnight it. Probably several days, then go back to anchorage and get a hotel, take showers, and fly back the next day. I might have to get a bigger handgun for bears and humans....

Do Denali first. If you get the bug to do more up there, Denali will give you a heads up with what to expect next time. Plus, they are better equiped at Denali to recover your body when the brown bears eat you.
Trying to get on the no fly list, one post at a time.

Watch out for the Black Bears and the Grizzly Bears... you need to know how to tell the difference in bear activity in the area you're hiking:

    ------------------------------------------------------
After a number of attacks on hikers and campers in Alaska, the Department of Fish & Game released the following advisory:

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.

Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in it and smell like pepper.

Never been to Alaska outside of an airport. But from what I know of it; black flys that bite, big-assed mosquitos that also bite and as mentioned Grizzly / Kodiak bears that really bite.

A big handgun .41 or .44 mag would be good. A big bore rifle .45-70, .444 etc. would be even better. Making noise as you hike also recommended, bells, radios, singing anything to not suprise a bear as you walk up on it.

If we did alaska, I'd insist that everyone else carry bear mace IN THEIR HAND as we hiked. I would be the only one carrying a firearm, as two of the other 3 are liberals and the other conservative does not own a gun. So, needless to say, I won't be stopping a griz from eating the two libs who fought against my right to ccw in kansas.
