Talking New England Clam Chowder for New Years....

My wife is busy working on creating a dimensioned house plan on the computer for the subcontractors (builders) in Miss, so I told her I'd do dinner tonight.

So, I get on the interwebz and search for clam chowdeh - and of course got a bunch of reicpes. I picked one, modified it a bit (didn't have any carrots or gasp, bacon!) and went to the local grocery to get the missing ingredients. On the stove right now and almost done - the clams go in last and only cook for a couple mins so they don't turn to rubber.

    Cheers!!!

    Sacrilegious!

You must have black eyed peas and cabage on New Years Day!

In northern Ohio it was sauerkraut on New Years Eve, probably one of the reasons I left

Few things beat good clam chowder IMO.

I'm doing black eyes with smoked ham hocks and jalapeños involved and cabbage & smoked sausage with red & yellow potatoes.

I guess in thinking about it kraut is a form of cabbage (a nasty form). If I remember right they would cook sausage in it too. I wonder where that tradition came from?

    Germany.

I love kraut with bratwurst. Mmmmm... and what would a reubin sandwich be without kraut?

And yeah, I know I'm supposed to eat the black eyed peas... maybe I'll have them for a little snack later Right before I check my TX loto ticks.

Do a quick rinse on it, not total, just leave some of the vinegar in there, but weaken it. Then add to the sausage. It tones down the salt & sour....

The cabage is money, the peas are luck...

Several ways to help kraut if you don't enjoy it straight.

    Wash the flavor out.

Add shredded raw cabbage and cook together.

    Cook with any spicy sausage.

Add a large dollop of sour cream, either while heating, or at serving time.

Thats sounds really good. Could do without the cabbage unless it's saurkraut. Here in Pa. most of us of German desent it has always been pork roast with saurkraut. O.S.A.K I love Clam chowder, were you making Manhatten, that it called for bacon and carrots? I prefer the New England version better.
