THE NSW Greens say shark nets are environmentally damaging and should be removed from the state's beaches, after a surfer was mauled in an attack at a netted beach near Newcastle.
Glen Folkard was surfing at Redhead Beach about 4.40pm (AEDT) yesterday when a shark, thought to be a bull shark, dragged him under, sliced his leg open and took a chunk from his surfboard.
The attack follows another at North Avoca at the beginning of the month, and has led to calls from the Greens to remove nets at NSW beaches because they are ineffective and kill marine life.
Greens MP Cate Faehrmann said shark nets were nothing but a "psychological comfort to swimmers".
"Since (shark meshing) was first introduced in 1937 there has only been one fatality on a meshed beach."
