    338 Federal Magnum?

In the latest CDNN flier there's a $399 Ruger M77 Hawkeye stainless rifle they list as being in caliber 338 Federal Magnum. I've heard of 338 Federal (308 case based) but never a 338 federal magnum. I'm guessing either it's a typo and it's really 338 federal or the 338 Winchester Magnum, either of which I'd find worth owning (maybe the Federal alittle more).

Anyone shoot a 338 Federal? How do you like it? How about a M77 Hawkeye? For the money it seems like a good deal, I've not handled "hawkeye" but the M77's I've shot seemed to do very well. Are there any issues with the Hawkeye's I should know about as well? A 338 308 based case seems to be a interesting cartridge and I'm thinking of calling in the morning.

.338 Federal is basically a 358 Winchester. You might say it's an improved 358 Win but very similar ballistics.

Never heard of the .338 Federal Magnum

So the ad copy guy can't tell the difference between 338 Winchester magnum and 338 federal. This is exactly why I no longer deal with Walmart. The moron kept handing me 300 Winchester Magnum whenever I asked for 300 Weatherby Magnum. He explained over and over again he had no Weatherby brand ammunition and that they were the same thing anyway. I could see the Weatherby 300 magnum on the lower left bottom shelf but I could not get that brain dead snot licking son of a bitch to bend over and get it for me.

All the money I spent in that department and that was the kind of service I got from them.

    The .308 Win. cartridge family.

    • .243 Winchester
    • .260 Remington
    • 7mm-08 Remington
    • .308 Winchester
    • .338 Federal
    • .358 Winchester

Standard (.30-06) length belted magnum cartridges.

    • .257 Weatherby Magnum
    • .264 Winchester Magnum
    • .270 Weatherby Magnum
    • 7x61 Sharpe & Hart Super*
    • 7mm Remington Magnum
    • 7mm Weatherby Magnum
    • .308 Norma Magnum
    • .300 Winchester Magnum
    • .338 Winchester Magnum
    • .358 Norma Magnum
    • .458 Winchester Magnum

And yes, there is no such thing as a .338 Federal Magnum cartridge. The .338 Federal cartridge dates back to 2006. It is simply a .308 Win. opened up to use a .338" diameter bullet.

    After today, it's all historical.
