He enjoys shooting it, but some AR guys have told him it's the worst AK to have and it doesn't last long and he now has a complex about it. I've told him it's fine-at least as good as my Chinese MAK-90, but he thinks it's just another of my attempts to make him save his money. He is a home schooler who works part time at a ranch and slaves away for the little money he makes.
Just tell him anybody who owns an AR-jam-o-matic and thinks the world of it couldn't tell a WASR-10 from a true junk pile!!!!
Wow, that statement should stir things up. To get things straight, that is not my feeling, but something you tell a moron to get is brain even further fuzzed up. If I didn't like ARs I wouldn't have built several, and had one custom made for my daughter to compete with.
And I like WASRs too, or is that WASR-10s too. Same thing.
Tell your son the only thing wrong with his WASR is the AR guys were jealous he had one and they didn't.

How about and endurance test between his WASR and their ARs? Every gun make and model, no matter the brand will have their occasional turd. Just like vehicles, computers, electronics, etc.
Example, many 1911 snobs and pistol shooters in general, say all Taurus guns are POS. My Taurus 1911, and GPWASRs, have been fantastic.
Does it function the way it's supposed to? Check. Sights straight? Check. Does what he wants it to do? Double check. All that matters

Besides the worse AK are the MISR90's, followed by any factory built Heese model, which are then followed by the USA Bwest made guns, so it couldn't be possibly any worse then the 4th worse AK model...
I had a WASR-10 back in the day, that had the drag style stock on it. It was a fine shooting rifle...wish I would have kept it.
There are a lot of guys who own them and shoot them a lot. Probably more boys hitting the range this weekend with their WASR's than mall ninja's with their AR's.
At least he can drudge through snow, water, sand, swamps, and mud with his WASR. Those guys with the AR's would not want to do that with out packing a 2month supply of Hoppes 9 solvent and oil. LOL
Also those AR boys have to worry about finicky magazines, ammo, and such. Last I checked steel case ammo isn't kind to the AR, where AK's will eat anything you give them.
Every screen name on every website I post at is GPWASR10, my first EBR. It's a FINE rifle... and I roll my own AR's.

I don't personally own a wasr. But my buddy does and loves it, shoots every time and never jams, id put it against an ar anytime anyday
I wouldn't compare a WASR to a MAK-90. As long as it shoots, and has no bugs, it's OK.
I sold all my guns and ammo, now I live the quiet retired life.
I have built many AKs, I have a Krebs Custom, I have Polish, Hungarian, Romanians of all flavors. I have had Valmets and all sorts of Kalashnikovs, and a WASR is just fine by me. In fact I have several. As the father of home schoolers, there ain't a thing wrong with a home schooler shooting a WASR and telling the AR crowd to kindly mind their own business.

The WASR is an AKM - not equivalent to an AR. Two different firearms.
The WASR will take much more abuse than an AR and keep running. It will tolerate much more in the way of ammunition than an AR will.
Tell him to ask his friends if they'd like to drop their AR's on a cement floor... most will not. The receivers can crack if hit hard in that manor. An AKM can handle that kind of abuse much better than an AR.
The AR is a great rifle but is a different animal than the AKM.
Tell him to enjoy his WASR for what it is and not to cave to his friends idiotic comparisons. They are obviously jealous of his AK
Also, the ammo for the AK is much less expensive and if he enjoys shooting, it might be good to remember that.

Just remind him this is coming from people who sit around and argue about 1 X 7 vs. 1 X 9 twist, gas vs. piston, etc....
They don't like anything unless it's DD, Noveske, Larue. Their opinion means nothing. That AK will be going reliably much longer than those AR's. And remind him they consider wolf junk, so even if he upgrades AK's, he'd still have to shoot the finest brass and bullets known to man.

Well my WASR is the gun I have owned the longest (that I bought myself, about 10 years now)...probably has 15,000+ rounds through it...still ticking...I think I have cleaned in maybe 2 times.
Lets see their ARs shoot nothing but the old lacquer cased wolf and go with out cleaning...
Trust me there are much much worse AKs...MISRs, some of the joekin ones, ect...He enjoys shooting it, but some AR guys have told him it's the worst AK to have and it doesn't last long and he now has a complex about it.
BTW those guys saying the MAK-90 is better....back in 2000 on the old board, before gunsnet existed one of the members who was a metallurgist did a test of the 2 rifles in 1999. He discovered the MAK-90 is less accurate as it heats up then the WASR when it heats up because of the steel used. He even took samples to a lab to prove it. So the finish and build quality maybe a little higher on the MAK-90, but the WASR may have a slight edge in accuracy.

id tell them well have an endurance test, buy a 1k case of shitty steel cased ammo, and fire them all off, without cleaning and oiling, or any maintenance. see which rifles make it through without jamming.
