Sounds to me like you could make the switch to process automation. Instrument techs make mid $30's hour to $40 hour. Basically you calibrate switches and transmitters, land them into the process computer and test the "instrument loop" to see if it works. i.e. the switch or transmitter activates a valve in the manner it is supposed to...
You could always work overseas as a contractor.
