    Chanting USA is racist

"A Texas school district has filed a complaint alleging that students from a rival school engaged in racism by chanting “USA, USA” at a basketball game. The students involved in the incident were reprimanded and forced to apologize."

The question is was it meant to be racially degrading to the other team. Without being there it seems the coach of the team with the supporters chanting it thought so...

How could it be "racially degrading"?

    The students are either:

    (1) American citizens

    -or-

    (2) Illegal aliens

If #1, what the hell is their beef over chanting "USA"?

If #2, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY COUNTRY!!!

Note some of the beef came from their (as in the students doing the chanting) head coach, as I stated since I wasn't' there I'll have to go with the senior adult in the group over the kids.

Although really you can't see how questioning a person's nationality based on the color of their skin could be considered insulting? If their coach was right and they were meaning the chant to infer the students on the other team weren't Americans or American enough you don't see how that could be taken as insulting?

If they were questioning their nationality, then they weren't being racist, were they? Nationality does not equal race. If it was meant to be disparaging, then call it what it is, bad sportsmanship.

I would guess if the basis of questioning of the nationality was made primarily on the race of the kids on the other team I think you could make a case it might be racist. Again I wasn't there and really don't know what the determination was based on as much as deferring to their coach who took enough offense to the chant to end it.

So how does their coach ending it prove anything other than he may have thought it poor sportsmanship?

Why would it be poor sportsmanship? What about the chant would the coach find poor sportsmanship like?

So taunting another team on their perceived nationality is good sportsmanship?

If the other team had been Canadian and they'd chanted "USA...USA"...would that have been racist...or bad sportsmanship?

Uh, no. It was racist because the other American HS basketball players were predominantly Hispanic (See race was there if you choose to see it). The other team was predominantly white. Even though they were ALL American kids, the white fans started chanting USA to imply that the other team were foreigners. that's racist. And ignorant too. But we see that sort of ignorance in abundance here on Gunsnet as well. If the opposing Basketball team were from, say, Hawaii, and the majority of the squad were Samoan American kids. It would be fucked up to KNOWINGLY imply that they are less "American" than another squad of Causasian American kids. If they WERE illegal, then of course, fuck em. But to do that to other Americans is bullshit.

Maybe you need to spend some time down here in Texas. The fucking Mexicans are moving in so fast it'll make your head spin. I guarantee that the "hispanic" team was full of Mexicans - all talking to each other in Spanish.

We saw the same thing in soccer. And guess who was the most brutal and verbal about USA? The American hispanics on our team!! Yes - they don't like be lumped in with the Mexicans.

Anybody that isn't living in this situation needs to step back and think about what they are saying - what information they have and just how damned happy they'd be to be living with an ever increasing Mexcian population... And when I say Mexican, that's exactly what I mean.

This isn't about racism, it's about defending the USA.

God bless those kids and thier coach. They have the balls to stand up to political correctness and show their national pride.

Uh, no. It wasn't racist, because nationality doesn't equal race. If the other team was from Zimbabwe and all black, would chanting USA be racist? Or Nationalist? Again, it may be bad sportsmanship, but it's not racist. Given the number of illegals in every state of this nation, and given the huge number in border states like Texas...it's no surprise such a display of nationalism and bad sportsmanship was displayed, but that still doesn't mean it's racist.

Did you NOT understand what I wrote. IF the other team were ALSO fellow Americans, it can be seen as a racial SLIGHT. "Oh, you're not WHITE americans, thus you are not american" It is a simple concept. you know
